I don't think he really loved her. After Robert rebellion's was over, Robert stayed in Kings Landing and didn't even bother to look for Lyanna who had been "abducted". It was Ned wo went all the way to Dorne to find her.

I think Robert desperately wanted to be a part of the Stark family, since he was best friends with Ned. Lyanna was exactly the way to achieve that for him. I think he did love her to an extent, but he wasn’t in love with her for who she was, hence why Lyanna chose to run off with Rhaegar instead. When she did that he felt ultimately rejected.

Robert was in love with the idea of Lyanna, not the person herself. But Rhaegar was no better.

Obsessed with and in love with are not the same thing.

I have to agree with you. I tried to represent my version of the story, i wanted both of them to love her and not only see her as an object. I wish the show gave us more concrete flashbacks on their story, more details on the love both Robert and Rhaegar felt for her. It is such a sad story

Marianne Tbh the casting of Lyanna wasn’t what I had envisioned from the passages I have read about her. The actress was fine but I think she was meant to have a wilder, more striking look as many people were drawn to her in the story. I guess I expected her to have a more unique beauty and I see more of that in Katie’s look than the actress that was chosen (although she is too old for the role). And yes, I agree that her and Rhaegar’s relationship was very problematic but in the time that the story is meant to replicate, I don’t think it was considered “pedophilic” to be married that young (although it is still wrong of course). I’m not sure how old Rhaegar was but at least in the show it was portrayed as a mutual relationship based on consent and love. I haven’t gotten to the books yet so I’m not sure how their relationship was portrayed there.
