Ο Γάιος είναι ο μεγαλύτερος οικισμός των Παξών. Βρίσκεται στο νότιο μέρος του νησιού. Είναι το κεντρικό λιμάνι των Παξών και η έδρα του Δήμου Παξών.
Το λιμάνι του Γαΐου προστατεύεται από δυο νησιά, το νησί της Παναγιάς, στο οποίο βρίσκεται εκκλησία και μοναστήρι, απέναντι από το νέο λιμάνι των Παξών και το νησί του Αγίου Νικολάου, το οποίο βρίσκεται σε ιδιαίτερα μικρή απόσταση από τον Γάιο, δημιουργώντας έναν πλωτό διάδρομο ανάμεσά τους, έναν μηνίσκο, για αυτό το λόγο το βορειότερο τμήμα του λιμανιού ονομάζεται Μανέσκος.
Στο λιμάνι του Γαΐου υπάρχει μαρίνα στην οποία βρίσκουν καταφύγιο μικρά αλιευτικά αλλά και τουριστικά σκάφη, τα οποία κατά την τουριστική περίοδο πηγαίνουν τακτικά στους Αντιπάξους, αλλά και σε διαδρομές γύρω του νησιού.
Στο νέο λιμάνι του Γαΐου, ένα περίπου χιλιόμετρο από το κέντρο του Γαΐου, στην άκρη του Μανέσκου, πιάνουν τα μεγαλύτερα πλοία που προέρχονται από Ηγουμενίτσα και Κέρκυρα.
Στον Γάιο, την πρωτεύουσα των Παξών, υπάρχουν τέσσερις εκκλησίες, η εκκλησία της Αναλήψεως, στην πλατεία (πιάτσα) στο λιμάνι και σε μικρή απόσταση προς τα νότια η εκκλησία των Αγίων Αναργύρων, ενώ πολύ κοντά προς την ανατολική πλευρά ο ναός της Αγίας Τριάδας και στα όρια του οικισμού ο ναός των Αγίων Αποστόλων, στον οποίο αναφέρεται ότι είναι και ο τάφος του Αγίου Γαΐου. Στον εξωτερικό χώρο του ναού των Αγίων Αποστόλων βρίσκεται το νεκροταφείο του Γαΐου.
Κατά την παράδοση ο οικισμός του Γάιου, πήρε το όνομά του από τον Άγιο Γάιο, μαθητή του Αγίου Παύλου από την Κόρινθο, ο οποίος πέθανε στους Παξούς και τάφηκε στο Γάιο κάτω από το άγιο βήμα του ναού των Αγίων Αποστόλων.☆
☆ Gaios is the largest settlement of Paxos. It is located in the southern part of the island. It is the main port of Paxos and the seat of the Municipality of Paxos.
The port of Gaios is protected by two islands, the island of Panagia, where there is a church and monastery, opposite the new port of Paxos, and the island of Agios Nikolaos, which is located at a very short distance from Gaios, creating between them a waterway, a meniscus, which is why the northernmost part of the port is called Maneskos.
In the port of Gaios there is a marina where small fishing and tourist boats find shelter, which during the tourist season regularly go to Antipaxos, but also on routes around the island.
In the new port of Gaios, about a kilometre from the centre of Gaios, on the edge of Maneskos, the larger ships from Igoumenitsa and Corfu dock.
In Gaios, the capital of Paxos, there are four churches, the church of the Ascension, in the piazza of the harbour and a short distance to the south the church of Agioi Anargyroi, while very close to the east side is the church of Agia Triada and on the edge of the settlement the church of Agioi Apostoloi, where it is said that the tomb of Agios Gaios is located. The cemetery of Gaios is located outside the church of the Holy Apostles.
According to tradition, the settlement of Gaios was named after Saint Gaios, a disciple of Saint Paul from Corinth, who died in Paxos and was buried in Gaios under the holy step of the Church of the Holy Apostles.☆
