I was enamored by an earlier upload of this same footage that captivated me so thoroughly, and i had a conversation in the comments with a greek gentleman that revealed the historical context of this scene. But it was all lost when the account was deleted. I went two years without knowing how to find this clip again since everything is greek and i am but a humble american trying to find media that is not of the western milieu. Well, maybe I am a little bit "Greek", after all... My family comes from that far south part of Italy, so probably I am at least partly "Greek", genetically, if not linguistically... We don't speak "Griko", but we are Orthodox... I'm American by nationality, Italian by heritage, and probably Greek by genetics.

[και όχι "με κερί"... που όντως ΔΕ στρέχει-ταιριάζει, αφού το στενό παράθυρο της φυλακής ήταν αυτό που φώτιζε το κελί... και σίγουρα ΔΕΝ τους άφηναν κεριά!] Πόρτα ανοίγει, πόρτα Κλείνει, μα ΔΙΠΛΟ είναι το κλειδί! Συγκινητική εκτέλεση και σημαντική επειδή χρησιμοποιεί τους αυθεντικούς στίχους του τραγουδιού, που αποδίδουν αυτό που ήθελε να πει ο Απόστολος Καλδάρας, ο οποίος το εμπνεύστηκε βράδυ βλέποντας τη φυλακή του Επταπυργίου (Γεντί Κουλέ). Μόνο στην αρχή το σωστό είναι "Νύχτωσε και στο Γεντί το σκοτάδι είναι βαθύ" και όχι "νύχτωσε χωρίς φεγγάρι".

Μου θυμίζει βραδιές στο κορυδαλλό όταν έβρεχε έξω και εμεις παίζαμε με ότι παλαιά όργανα που έμειναν από τους προιγουμενος «πελάτες» μέχρι τα μεσάνυχτα. Καλύτερα να μην τα θυμάμαι……
@@dimitrisaivaliotis5616 Τα "τάστα" των παλιών οργάνων, ουσιαστικά έντερο ή μετάξι (ή πλαστικό σήμερα) τυλιγμένο γύρω από το μπράτσο. Συνήθως υπάρχουν πάνω από 12 ανά οκτάβα και είναι εύκολα κινητοί, αποδίδοντας εύκολα τα μόρια της παραδοσιακής μουσικής αναλόγως το μακάμι. Κι όντως αυτό το μπουζούκι έχει μπερντέδες, άρα πατάει σε νότες εκτός των κλασσικών του μπουζουκιού, κι έτσι ακούγεται σαν ούτι. Για τον ίδιο λόγο μου θύμισε λαγούτο.
@@dimitrisaivaliotis5616 μπερντέδες( μπερντές = κουρτίνα η χώρισμα από τούρκικα)είναι ένα παλιότερο σύστημα διαχωρισμού της ταστιέρας για τον προσδιορισμό των μουσικών φθόγγων. Χρησιμοποιείται ακόμα στα ελληνικά λαούτα στους ταμπούρα δες,στα σαζοειδή,στο ιρανικό( αν δεν κάνω λάθος) μποζούκ αλλά και σε όργανα με δοξάρι όπως το γιαλί ταμπούρ. Βέβαια δεν είναι αποκλειστικά εργαλείο της ανατολής γιατί χρησιμοποιείται και στα μεσαιωνικά λαούτα της δύσης σε κάποιους προγόνους της κιθάρας πχ μπαρόκ αλλά και σε κάποια ,ας πούμε, βιολοειδή π.χ βιόλα Ντι Γκάμπα κτλ.. Είναι ουσιαστικά μια θηλειά γύρω από το μπράτσο του οργάνου και οι ταστιέρα αυτών των οργάνων έχει συνήθως από την πίσω πλευρά μια εγκοπή όπου μπαίνει ο κόμπος της θητείας. Φτιαχνόταν από έντερο γάτας (παλιά χορδή) και σήμερα από πετονιά( ή πλαστική χορδή κιθάρας). Έχει το μειονέκτημα ότι φθείρεται με τη χρήση και ότι έχει μια μικρή κινητικότητα πάνω στην ταστιέρα ,κατ επέκταση πολλές φορές ίσως να χρειαστεί να μετατοπιστεί λίγο για να αποδώσει σωστά τον φθόγγο. Αυτό όμως είναι ταυτόχρονα και πλεονέκτημα γιατί " κουρδιζοντας" την ταστιέρα μπορεί κάποιος να αποφύγει τα λάθη της τονικότητας που προκειπτουν από την σταθερή θέση των ταστων. Επίσης κάποιος μπορεί μετατοπίζοντας τους μπερντέδες να προσεγγίσει μη συγγερασμένες κλίμακες και φυσικούς φθόγγους αποδίδοντας πιο σωστά μια μελωδία.Τελος μορφολογικά είναι πιο ντελικατοι από τα ταστα επιτρέποντας την διατήρηση ηχοχρωματος κατά την μετάβαση από το ένα ταστο στο άλλο προσδίδοντας το χαρακτηριστικό σαζοειδες παίξιμο, υπάρχουν μπουζουξήδες που παίζουν με ταπεινωμενα τάστα για έχουν αυτόν τον ήχο
Hello my friend. I do not speak french but I will try to explain this to you in English, and hopefully you'll understand. This is indeed a sad song. It was written in 1945. The music genre is rebetiko, a greek kind of music from the 1920s, 30s and 40s, which is associated with poorer society classes and tells the stories of the people. This song was first sang by jewish greek singer Stella Haskil. It was written because of the arrest, imprisonment and torture of greek communists from the greek right wing government during the years of the greek civil war, which took place straight after world war two. The song was of course censored by the government. The song talks of a young man who is imprisoned and cannot sleep at night, because he is in jail, waisting his youth, and has done nothing wrong to deserve it. The government did not allow the composer to record and publish the song, because it talked about imprisonment of innocent people, most of which had also taken part in the greek resistance against the nazis in world war two and helped liberate greece from fascists, only to be imprisoned afterwards. They were imprisoned solely because of their political views. The government did not want popular art to remind people of their wrong doings and fascist ways. The lyrics were changed, so as not to make any reference of prison and torture, they have changed the lyrics in a way that presents the young man not being able to sleep at night, not because he is innocent and he is in jail for no reason, but because he is suffering from love. The original lyrics were: The night has fallen in Yedi (Yedi was a famous prison in greece), and the darkness is deep. And yet this young man cannot sleep. Who knows what he is waiting for, all night, till the morning comes. He is waiting at the narrow window, that sheds light into his cell. The door (at his cell) opens, the door closes again, and it has a double key. What has the poor boy done and they threw him in jail? The censored lyrics that the government allowed: The night has fallen without a moon, and the darkness is deep. And yet this young man cannot sleep.
