She has given the character just the right mix of a showgirl and an actress. There is no need to present Mireille as some kind of a tart, imo. Brava, Angelina.
When you say Nikolai Maximovich, do you mean Nikolai Thiskaridze? I may not have kept up, but was he not Angelina's tutor in some of the documentaries here? I have been following clips of Angelina because there is something very special about her stage presence, even if I myself cannot judge the pointe technique so well.
I do know what this ballet is about, but I make no excuse for my opinion that the dancing, costumes, music, and choreography during the scene at the court of Versailles is far and away the best part of this ballet! I fell in love with Rod’hin and Vorontsova bc of their exquisite dancing and artistry, in addition to their excellent strength and technique, and the choreography, which seeks to pay homage to the old French mannerisms. I’m not certain I’ve ever heard of these dancers before, which shows the excellence of their schools....the only example I can think of is in American basketball, where excellent teams have a “deep bench,” meaning a large number of excellent players who aren’t even on the court. Anyway, after Versailles, the rest of the ballet resembles the plainness of the costumes the dancers wear, it just does nothing for me.
