The woodpecker is of medium size (body length 25-26 cm, wingspan 38-40 cm, weight 90-160 g), with plumage and shape reminiscent of a green woodpecker.
Slightly smaller than the green woodpecker, differs from the latter in thin black "whiskers" from top to bottom from gray "cheeks". The anterior part of the crown of the male is red, and that of the female is gray. The upper body is greenish, with a yellow loin; bottom - off-white, with a slight yellowish tinge. The wings are dark with numerous contrasting white spots. The paw is typical for woodpeckers, zygodactyl (when sitting - two toes are directed forward, and two back).
The head is light gray. Neck, chest, lower body are greenish-gray. The back, wing coverts and tail are grayish-green. The yellowish-green uppertail is clearly visible in flight. From the beak, black stripes of "mustache" stretch along the cheeks. The male has a small red spot on the anterior part of the vertex; the female does not have it. There are no seasonal variations in plumage. The color of young birds is paler, the “whiskers” are less distinct, on the sides there are dark streaks. Young males have a red spot on their forehead. It differs from the green woodpecker similar to it, first of all, by the absence of a black mask around the eyes, thinner "whiskers" and smaller body size.
