Киев-4 Soviet Transistor Radio Kit Unboxing (1990, Ukraine/USSR)

This "Киев-4" (or KIEV-4 in English) radio kit was apparently designed in the 1980s, but this particular example appears to have been built 1990, shortly before Ukraine formally declared independence from the USSR. This kit is unbuilt and I intend to leave it that way, since there can't be too many unbuilt ones left. Also, both of my inferences from the schematic turned out to be correct, this set is a TRF and it does tune AM and longwave.
P.S. Yes I know this is a long video, but it's not often I get my hands on a NOS unbuilt kit, and I wanted to show all the contents.

It's my first radio in 1986. It's still working & places in my collection!
@50sTransistorRadios

Interesting, how well does this set actually work? It seems to only have one tuned stage, and then a bunch of amplification after that.
@ut4uum462
@ut4uum462 8 лет назад
+50sTransistorRadios It's working perfectly. A simple set of a straight amplification reciever. Sensitivity of the set is above 20mV/m and it's can recieve LW & MW bands. Max output power is about 60mWatts. Tuning is made by black knob of the front of reciever. Onn the side we have LW/MW band selector. P.S: Yellow case color is very Rare! I can help You to build it.

Interesting to hear that this set is a good performer, I would not have guessed that from the circuit design. I am probably going to leave this one un-built though, since there can't be too many of these left that have not been assembled.

It's a good idea! Non-assembled Kit is very rare too. I have six KIEV-4 recievers in my collection, but it's very hard to find non-assemled kit even iin Ukraine

a better use for this kit would be to have some circuit boards made in china and put together a parts kit, it could be a nice forum project, you could even do a 3d printed case.
@Sheevlord
@Sheevlord 3 года назад
Modern fiberglass PCB would certainly be an improvement. By the looks of it this kit uses a phenolic paper board. Those are infamous for being unreliable, prone to deterioration in humid conditions and delamination when soldering.

"Cloth covered wire" could be Litzwire, very many, very fine wires in parallel in an insulation which only touch each other at both ends, maximizing the "Q" of the tuned circuit. Used extensively in the early days of radio, Western nations just switched to building superheterodyne radios in the 1930s.
@Sheevlord
@Sheevlord 3 года назад
Judging by the instructions it was meant as a toy/learning aid for hobbyists. This is probably why it's not superheterodyne - to make the circuit simpler and easier to understand. The handwritten notes on the parts list seem to be from the factory. Probably they forgot to mention a few parts when printing the instruction, so they added them by hand. Fun fact - older Soviet resistors didn't have the color bands, instead the value was silkscreened onto the case. It could be tricky to read without magnification on smaller resistors
@50sTransistorRadios
@50sTransistorRadios 3 года назад
I agree that this radio is just meant to be a fun project or a teaching aid, though if it had been a superheterodyne, it would have provide a better learning experiance for modern radios. I have noticed that Soviet resistors have the value printed on them, much like modern surface mount components.

The price on it is 8 rubles. And the date of manufacture is the right column, second line. So 11th month, and not sure if thats 80 or 90 for the second number.
@YurrkaB

Also, if you scan the manual and use OCR to put it into text, then use google translator to translate it for you. Also, its rissian from the looks of it. Ukrainian uses "i" and russian uses reverse N. The letter gives "ee" sound like in BEER.

And I have actually Cosmos-M and Orljonok-M, just those soviet, the smallest radio recievers, superheterodynes at mid wave range. And the mose smallest radio was Rubin, with size of a two match boxes. The first two devises of 1968 and 1973. I only changed capacitors in order to increase the volume. Just adore these radio devices. All the best from Ukraine.

Hiya Matt, thank you very much for posting that, that was a very interesting video. A slight departure from your usual format of showing us all a fully built working radio ergo a pleasant change. I used to have an uncle who would collect all kinds of stuff just because it was Russian in the mistaken belief that the quality was better than was available outside the Eastern block lol Pretty much most of the things he'd collected, Russian watches, radios etc although sturdily made weren't of as good a quality as was widely available at the time 70s-80s over here in UK but he loved those things anyway lol. The video also got me thinking that in the unlikely event that I ever had loads of money it would be a good idea to collect radio sets from each and every country in the world lol Mad lol Anyway I hope you find someone on here who can help you with the translation you were after... Take care bye for now.

Peter Lorimer Peter, Russian built radios seem to be of highly variable quality, the "Russia 303" model I uploaded a video on a while ago is well made/designed, but others are not (like this one, A TRF with no frequency markings on the dial). I am actually trying to collect transistor radios from each country that made them, and I have a decent collection so far. -Matt

Sorry for reviving an old thread, I've assembled such a radio when I was a kid. You should not judge too harshly for the design and everything (like uncalibrated dial), since it's considered and positioned as a toy (a manual even states this in the header). It worked fine however, but batteries were the main issue - you could rarely find it in sales. And they leaked often :(

Well, back in a day, young people were encouraged to build things by own hands. Matt if you are interested in Polish transistor radios, I can provide one or two as a thank you for your excellent channel. Please contact me to discuss further details.
@50sTransistorRadios
@50sTransistorRadios 9 лет назад
WojtekDX Kits (from brands such as Heathkit, Knight, Eico and Radio Shack) were also popular here in the USA up until about 20 years ago, by which time you couldn't really build something comparable to a commercial product yourself for less than it cost to buy. I don't have any Polish made transistor radios, so I would be very much interested in acquiring one! Regards, Matt

I have never seen a Soviet consumer merchandise/goods except for the bulky binoculars in pawn shops. The only other thing that I saw was books mostly pictorial type with good quality papers sold very cheap even in India.
@50sTransistorRadios

The USSR made a decent amount of radios for export to the European market, but not many made it over to the USA, for obvious reasons.

The speaker and antenna look kinda impressive for that style of radio. It's too bad you don't want to build it, i would be interested in hearing the sound quality and sensitivity but i fully understand in wanting to keep it untouched. Thanks for the look.

4:02 This maybe an early discrete-component attempt at creating a crkt like the ZN414 IC chip, or a for runner the the Soviet version made with thin film technology in 1969
@50sTransistorRadios

That is possible, though I couldn't find an internal circuit diagram of the ZN414 to compare.

The radio takes batteries that are obsolete in the UK for certain. Better use 3xPP3 in parallel to equal the capacity of the OEM batteries. You can get these kits on ebay un-built. Best to use the latest capacitors & resistors in the build. The seller of mine warned that the quality of the components was lousy in the time this radio was around. Even factory built radios did not work when bought! Mine had two tracks on the PCB bridged by solder. A mistake in the factory! It now works. But i'm not sure if it's simply tough on batteries or needs some component replacement.

R is R in cyrilic russian. "reversed" r is "ya"
@xsc1000
@xsc1000 7 лет назад
No. R in latin is written as P in cyrilic. Letter R doesn´t exist in cyrilic. Only the reversed version Я for ya. Russian schematic diagrams use latin R, C, L for resistor, capacitor and coil, but other parts are often marked in cyrilic.

Very wasteful design. I think they hope that fancy rod antenna will give it the performance rather than a superhet design. You would be fine if not many stations around and they are not too far away. You would get great sound and poor selectivity.
@50sTransistorRadios

It sure doesn't look like a very good design from that schematic. I'm guessing they were trying to avoid IF transformers, which would need aligning.
