Over the last few months, there have been some M1 Mac users report that USB-C hubs have been killing and bricking their M1 Macs. Specifically, it seems to be the pass-through charging or power delivery (PD) feature.

I don't know about the M1 architecture, but on the 2016-2020 MBPs the circuits are designed in a way that if one fails, the other stops working too in most cases. I've never really seen a dead port by itself, it usually is the controller (like the CD3215) that fails and if it does, all the ports stop working. I might be wrong, but I think Apple implemented a similar design on the M1 Macs. At least the ones with 2 USB-C ports only.

This happened to me on a 2015 MacBook with USB C Dock several years ago. I was using it with a USB Storage drive attached, wasn't charging through the dock, and heard a click and the laptop screen went blank. Took it to an independent Mac repair shop and they confirmed the logic board was dead.
@PvtAnonymous

late answer, but this is probably a dead U4700. It still is (one of) the signature failures of the 12" from 2015 and is not caused by anything but Apple's shit engineering. It's the sad truth. It's a 5$ component and a 20 minute solder job to fix it, but barely anyone is gonna tell you that...

I have been using the Otolla 10port hub. It uses both usb c ports. I also use a charge through that plugs into the hub. I have not had any issues with either except occasionally a peripheral will turn off unexpectedly. That, I think, happens if the power draw exceeds the power available. I find the need for external hubs very important with the new M1 MacBook Pro, since it only has two usb c ports.

Thanks for the video. This has been a source of anxiety for me for the last weeks. Have had M1 MacBook Pro since end of January. While it works, I can actually replicated a spontaneous reboot by plugging both Anker 7 in 1 hub and the Apple VGA/USB-C adapter, connecting it to external drive. All of this on battery. When I eject the disk, unplug the hub and plug the power cable into the port the MacBook reboots within minutes. Not ok for a +€2000 machine. Wondering if anyone else has this?
@redpillsatori3020
@redpillsatori3020 2 года назад
So can you elaborate on the "spontaneous reboot by plugging both..." part? You were on battery power, plugged in the Anker hub, and then a VGA/USB-C adaptor to use an external drive? And after that it forced a reboot? First off, why use that cable? Oh you mean the USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter from Apple? Was it an off-brand?

I am convinced it killed my first 2021 M1 13” MacBook Pro. I believe it is what killed the monitor, which went completely black and unusable. It was an (AUKEY USB C Hub 10-in-1 Type C Adapter) from Amazon. Apple replaced my M1 and I got a new one now that I have not used a hub with yet, as I am honestly terrified to, so I’m stuck with 2 USBC ports, with sometimes only 1 as power is using the other. There is also currently another issue where the battery is showing needing support, even with it being 100% functioning, that is caused according to Apple support by a recent Big Sur update bug. So the M1 is full of weird problems currently.

I've experienced a similar issue. I have a 2019 13" Macbook Pro (not M1), and purchased a CalDigit TS3 to go along with my two Dell monitors. Everything works fine until I shut down my Macbook. It wouldn't turn back on. Needless to say I was scared shitless. I was able to turn it on a bit later (after 10 mins?). The same problem would occur later: not being able to turn on after I shut down my Macbook, though it always turn back on after a short wait.

Dear Sir, thank you for your video regrading USB C Docks. I have just purchased Baseus 6-1 Multi functional HUB. I have only started using this for the past week or so. I do have an old Hub which I have used on my old G4 Mac Tower for many years but decided to buy the Baseus only to see how well it performs. Let me know if that is safe as I have researched a fair bit about this brand and they have been positive.

Within a month of using the MacBook Pro 2020, the USB hub that cost over $115 stopped working completely. One day it made a screech sound and then would not upload or recognize the camera. So now I have to replace it to find out if the USB works at all. I had to resort back to using my old mac, just to get work done. This is the first time I have ever been disappointed in a Mac.

Its possible that mismatching AC adapters can cause problems. If you have too many devices you most likely have too many AC adapters and accidentally use the wrong adapter providing inadequate wattage.

My first M1 MacBook Pro logic died just 3 weeks after use, then the replacement machine, the camera died and I actually asked for a refund, first time in my life I’ve asked for a refund from apple ever. So 2 M1 MacBook Pro’s down, I have desperately been looking for a replacement, but the recent iMac launch was underwhelming and I suspect I’ll be headed back for my 3rd Mi MacBook Pro, fingers crossed,three times is a charm.

I have never owned a MacBook before and i was wondering will i have to copy the DVDs to the MacBook’s hard drive first or can i copy the DVDs straight to a external hard drive with it? This got me thinking because if i can copy them straight from a DVD drive to a external hard drive I assume I would have to use a USB hub.

As much as I watch Louis Rossman’s videos and see how MacBooks just randomly die and need board level repair I think it’s a safe bet to either never keep anything important on your Mac that’s not also stored somewhere else or own a time machine backup router.
