Though Ivan Franko is one of the best Ukrainian poets and writers, he didn’t write the lyrics of this song. "Скрипливії ворітечка" is a folk song. In 1955 Ukrainian folklorist and composer Leopold Yashchenko had found and written down from the inhabitants of the village of Lutenka, Poltava oblast.

The title of the song is "Skrypliviyi voritechka, meaning "squeaking gates". That's a traditional Ukrainian lyrical song, recorded in 1955 in Poltava region. This is a song about love, lying people and squeaking gates, that are hard to open. I'm not sure, but this song could have been recorded during the performance in the theater.

The performance “Чим пісня жива?” (“Why is the song alive?’ or to be more exact “Whereby is the song alive?”) was dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Lviv National Literary Memorial Museum of Ivan Franko (founded on October 10, 1940) though clothes and songs have more references to Ivan Franko times than to the period of the World War II. However, “Скрипливії ворітечка” is a folk song, clothes are look like the urban fashion of the beginning of XX centuries. Yes, you are right! It’s a European fashion. Ukraine is actually in Europe. Lviv was a part of Habsburg monarchy by that time. Embroidered shirt (vyshyvanka) nowadays is of course an important Ukrainian national symbol, though not all Ukrainians in the end of XIX - beginning of XX wore vyshyvankas. It was mainly peasant clothes. So, clothes used in the performance were quite usual for Ukrainians in the cities. Ivan Franko, actually, liked to combine vyshyvanka and modern dress-suite.

Thank you, Dear Maurice! as far as I know, [kuːr] - ba - sy (i am not sure in transcrioption, but you pronounce very close) - plural of the "Kurbas". This title is created from the name of our theater director Les Kurbas, who was one of the best on the 1930-th years, but he was arested by soviets and killed on 1937-th in the Solovki prison camp among the rest killed 1835 people for stalin's terror...
