The Black Army was an anarchist army formed mostly of peasants and workers under the leadership of Nestor Makhno. They fought in the Russian Civil War against both the communist Red Army and monarchist White Army. Despite initial success, Makhno and the Ukrainian Free Territory were defeated in 1921 by the Bolsheviks. Ukraine became a part of the Soviet Union, and Nestor Makhno would live the rest of his life in France, where he would die in 1934.
The song is named after Kins'ki Rozdory, a town in southern Ukraine.
