Nikolay Kashirsky (born 16 August 1923 in Astrakhan, USSR) was a Soviet operetta singer and a TV presenter. Kashirsky had no formal music education and was trained as an actor at the drama studio of the Astrakhan Drama Theatre. He began his acting career in 1942 at the Stalingrad Music Comedy Theatre and the same year was drafted to the army to fight Nazi Germany in WWII. Demobilized in 1947, Kashirsky first joined the Music Comedy Theatre in Perm (1948-1948). then moved to the Irkutsk Operetta Theatre (1948-1958). In 1948, Kashirsky co-wrote the operetta "The Lights of Siberia" about the construction of Irkutsk Hydroelectric Power Station which enjoyed maximum attendance for next two years and won a state award. In 1958, Kashirsky was invited to work at the Moscow Operetta Theatre where he quickly became one of the leading artists. Not much of a professional singer, Kashirsky worked his acting skills to perfection. Irresistibly charismatic and plastic on stage, he was trusted with a variety of roles, including Count Boni in E. Kalman's "The Gypsy Princess", Zsupán in E. Kalman's "Countess Maritza", Dr. Falke in J. Strauss's "The Bat", Nicholas II in "White Night" by T. Khrennikov, Bogdan Susik in Yu. Milyutin's "Trembita", Macheath in B. Brecht's "The Threepenny Opera" and others. In 1958, he played the role of Toni in the cult Lenfilm 1958 musical "Mister X" (based on E. Kalman's operetta "The Circus Princess") by Yu. Khmelnitsky. He also did a lot of touring in the USSR and abroad and gave solo concerts. In the late 60s and the 70s, Kashirsky worked on the central TV as a presenter of the popular breakfast show "Morning Mail". He died in 1978 at the age of 54. In the video excerpt from a film-concert made in 1961 Kashirsky is singing as Count Boni from E. Kalman's operetta "The Gypsy Princess".
