This video shows the process of making a carved Cabriole leg. I have long wanted to try to make these famous legs.
Cabriol furniture style is a characteristic style of rounded furniture design, which gets its name from the shape of the product's legs.
A Cabriole or Cabriole leg is one (usually of four) vertical supports of a furniture product that has two bends: a convex upper and a concave lower one, the upper bend protrudes outward, and the lower one-inward. Both bends must be in the same plane.
Identical design styles were popular in ancient China and ancient Greece. In Europe, it became widespread at the very beginning of the 18th century, when it became part of the popular furniture styles that use curved shapes in France, England, and Holland.
It is believed that nothing symbolizes the decoration of furniture in the 18th century as a Cabriole leg. This design element was gaining popularity along with the General trend of creating furniture with more rounded shapes than previously accepted, in more strict styles. The Cabriole design is often associated with a squirrel tail or the "ball and claw" style in Chinese art. In England, this design was an important characteristic of the furniture styles of Queen Anne and Thomas Chippendale, a famous London furniture maker. Although Queen Anne reigned only until 1712, the style associated with her name existed and developed until 1760, and was imitated even longer. A typical chair of this style had a characteristic rounded back with a splat in the form of a vase (often slotted) and the front legs of a Cabriole.
In France, the Cabriole leg is associated with the style of Louis XV, which, in turn, is included in the Rococo era. In North America, cabriol design became widespread in the mid-18th century (early American furniture styles copied elements of the Queen Anne style). The concept of using Cabriole bends was based on their similarity to the shape of the legs of some mammals, especially ungulates. The term "cabriol" was most likely born in the United States, and its origin was related to the French word cabrioler, meaning "jumping like a goat". The cabriol style has several other famous relatives, items, and concepts.
