The spelling doesn't look much like Russian, because our writing sistem functions in Cyrillic, but in the nineteenth century there was an Arabic script, and in the early twentieth century, until 1938, the Latin script. By the way, the Latin Alphabet is more suitable for Circassian and other languages of the Caucasus. Our language is original, belonging to the North Caucasian family, which consists of two groups: Western, Adygo - Abkhazian and Eastern, Nakh - Dagestan. Adygs-as we call ourselves or Circassians, as others call us, consist of several sub-ethnic groups: Bzhedugs, Temirgoevs, live in the Republic Adygea. Besleneevtsy, Abadzehi in the Republic of Karachay- Cherkessia. Kabardins, in the Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria. Before the Russian- Caucasian war, there were other sub-ethnic groups of the Circassian people. The Abkhazians, the Circassians related people. After the war with the Russian Empire, only small chunks of land remained of the Circassian country, from which Autonomous republics were later created. Karachay and Balkar people, related to each other Turkic-speaking peoples who were part of Circassia. In the center of the Caucasus, the Ossetians Are an Iranian-Speaking people. Further East, the Nakhi; Ingush, Chechens who speak the same language but different dialects, are essentially one people, but like the Circassians, they are politically divided. And in the easternmost part of the North Caucasus, the Republic of Dagestan. There are several ethnic groups and sub-ethnic groups in Dagestan. The largest of them are: Avars, Dargins, Lezgins, Laks, Kumyks. The Kumyks are a Turkic-speaking people, but there is a version that they switched to Turkic under the influence of Turkic nomads. And of course, we have nothing to do with the Turks, the Persians, and even more so with the Russians (excluding the Turkic-speaking and Iranian-Speaking peoples that I have listed. We have our own culture and mentally we are different. The languages of the Caucasian peoples are unique and and do not repeat themselves anywhere in the world. But, some scientists, historians, linguists, give evidence of the relationship of the Circassians with the Hutts, and the Chechens with the Hurrians. And some claim that the autochthonous Caucasian peoples are related to the Basques, but this is not accurate 😁 I have briefly tried to describe the history and ethnogenesis of the Circassians in particular and the peoples of the Caucasus in General, for a better understanding.
