In the project ‘100 top places of Yamal’ our guide Igor Segeda will introduce you to Salekhard, the capital of Yamal, which has the centuries-old history and is part of the Union of Historical Cities of Russia. In 1994 the city imposed prohibition on construction of wooden apartment buildings, and it contributed to its modern appearance.
Among the sights of the city a special place is taken by buildings of the late XIX - early XX century, such as the house of the merchant Kornilov and the city manor complex. The Shemanovsky Museum is famous for the baby mammoth Lyuba well-known all over the world.
Salekhard is accessible by various means of transport: by land, air and water, with the possibility to navigate by precise coordinates. The name ‘Salekhard’ in translation from the Nenets language means ‘city on the cape’.
