The SCARIEST Thing About the James Webb Telescope

What is the Scariest thing about the James Webb Space Telescope? It's Not what it's going to see, it's where it's going to be!
When it launches on December 22, 2021, a rocket is going to send the telescope about one million miles (1.6 million km) from Earth. That's 4 times farther away than the moon. It will be stationed too far from Earth for astronauts to reach.
Whereas the Hubble Space Telescope had many visits from astronauts to service, the James Webb telescope will need to run perfectly from the get-go.
The telescope will have a fuel supply that should keep it stable in orbit for 10 years.
Planning for this scope began over 20 years ago, let's hope for the best!

Hi, everyone. Kindly peer-review / comment / correct my understanding: The age of the universe may NOT actually be 13 something billion years old or so. We assume that it is, due to the time that it takes light from the farthest galaxies.... We also assume that the speed of light has always been constant. iirc, from the big bang, space expanded & still continues to expand... -in fact, faster than the speed of light. Anything within expanding space will also be traveling at the same expansion rate (so faster than the speed of light, but at or less than the speed of light, relative to other stars & galaxies...) The point: images to be gathered by the HST /JWST will only reveal what happened well AFTER what we are already seeing... and not anytime/anything BEFORE/in the past. In other words, we cannot /will not see anything earlier than/beyond the past of what we are already seeing. So, any object, even if it is N billion light-years away, is already well ahead of its creation /formation, and we will never see that-how it was forming /being created, because it's “first light“ has passed so long ago.

A little update since I just came across this video after the launch. NASA scientists were able to take some shortcuts if you will during their launch to L2 and they have now announced that we have more fuel than we thought we would have and the mission will last more than 10 years as long as it's just a fuel consumption issue. The unfurling has begun and the spacecraft is communicating well. We have received our first bit of temperature data as of yesterday, today is now December 30th.

When starships are contracted to nasa it’ll be cheaper to send astronauts on the two week journey to fix the telescope rather than to make a new one. 3-4 week round trip. It’d be good research for future trips to Mars too

The fuel supply shouldn't be much of a worry. Almost all orbiting satellites somewhat become unaligned over the years but it's nothing to worry about. Fortunately we've experimented with L2 before. Like you said before though the scariest thing is if something goes wrong on it we are too far from it to fix it easily

The law of entropy is not gonna make this plan easy there are a million factors at play for example meteorites, technology malfunctions, radiation damage, common wear of moving parts, leaks signal loss, innumerable miscalculations. I feel that if this succeeds and does last the full 10 years it’ll be the greatest achievement in human history not only by technological advancements but in sheer terms of probability. This will be the most expensive gamble ever undertaken but it’s money we’ll spent I’d rather see money spent on a doomed expedition than a winning war

Don't worry about the launch. It's an extremely reliable system. Worry about the hundreds of commands the unit has to complete. It's six months, minimum, until we'll know if all is well. If everything goes right, we'll soon see the greatest show of all time.
