Setting Chomsky's intellectual capacity aside, it's worth noting that he intuitively understands on a fundamental level what so many Americans and Israelis don't -- that loving or supporting a country does NOT imply being happy with or supporting what it's government is doing. Dissent does NOT imply treason, lack of patriotism, or hostility to a country, its interests or its people.

If you're curious what he had to say when they perform that obvious edit, he has said it a thousand times and it's quite obvious why the israeli press wouldn't want to air it. He points out that Israel is the only state in the entire world that demands other states acknowledge its right to exist which is quite different than just acknowledging that it exists. He points out correctly that the U.S. conquered half of mexico and doesn't demand that Mexico take the position that the U.S. had the right to do so.

What is amazing to me is how sharp Chomsky's mind is at the age of 82. He can still cut a young interviewer in half with a couple of simply stated facts. If anyone wants to read about this great man, start with "Understanding Power". When he passes the world will be much the poorer, and now is when we need him the most.

@lukecarroll4052
@lukecarroll4052 3 года назад
Nah she prepared a lot for this, she knew a lot of facts from his history as a speaker and he is well known to be a coherent articulate speaker. But I think she used them to try and make him defensive, put him on the back foot and give more space to "interrogate" him aggressively. She knew how long it had been since he had been to Israel, about a recent issue where he was rejected at the border, knew he had loved in a kibbutz in the 50s. I think possibly by the end of the interview she might have even agreed with him, but she knows what her job was. To try and get him to say something outrageous so they could get an article out of it, to support the "Israel is threatened" byline which will generate many articles for months and which is clearly the narrative they have settled wit. They will side with the opinions of their largest or most profitable viewer base. And their ads are designed to be appropriate for those people. Which allows them to stay in business. Not to mention "the world is ending is Israel could be wiped out and Noam Chomsky loves it !!!!!!!!" Is much more interesting story, whether it's true or not. So Israel is at risk, despite the fact they are Americas dog in any fight in the middle east, America has a lot of dogs around the world.

She's actually a very good interviewer and doing Chomsky a great service, relative to many of the interviews we see in the states at least. She's asking the main questions that the hardliners would be concerned about and giving Chomsky time to explain his position in his normal lucid manner. Being any kinder to the man would undermine both of their roles in this case. The sad fact is that in her questions and statements she's reflecting the power holding segment of her country.

Fascinating interview. The interviewer should make more concise the format of her questioining and refrain from interrupting the interviewee as often as she does. Her interviewing style sometimes morphs into abject hectoring. Chomsky is a genius, his views on Isreal existing as a 'Jewish State' are so true. While I believe in Isreal's right to exist as a regular democracy, I also don't think it should exist as a 'Jewish State'. No country should be dominated by one religious point of view. My views on Iran existing as an Islamic state are exactly the same. No one should be so arrogant to believe that they are the 'chosen people' of God.
