About Uyghur European Ensemble
For thousands of years Uyghurs have contributed a rich cultural heritage to the world. Uyghur music and art are a great way to describe our history and background especially our world renowned12 Muqam, which in 2005 was designated by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisations (UNESCO) as part of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
In order to understand or to find out about a nation’s history, background, culture, music and well-known scholars who have made a great impact to the world, we have to take a look at many aspects in their field of work and their achievements as well as how they are influencing many people in the world. For the past few years, the Uyghur people have been extremely persecuted. Our language, religion, human rights and culture are being wiped out. In this regard, millions of Uyghur innocent boys and girls have been taken to concentration camps and tortured to their ethnicity.
Uyghur European Ensemble is a cultural artistic and music group that established by a group of diaspora Uyghur folk artists and musicians from Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, France, England and Belgium. Our ensemble was formed on the 9th April 2019 through democratic discussions by more than 10 Uyghur musicians getting together in Norway. Also, the ensemble was officially registered as a non-profit organisation in Sweden, on the 9th July 2019.
One of the main reasons why our ensemble was established in the first place was to maintain Uyghur culture traditions in western countries where we thought this was a very essential step to take in order to build up our ensemble.
Since our ensemble was founded, we came together and decided on our short-term & long-term goals, programme for concerts and rules and regulations within the ensemble which everybody has to obey. Within the last few months, we have dedicated our time and hard work to rehearsals, and we had 2 successful concerts in Belgium and the Netherlands.
The ensemble has 16 musicians and 3 volunteers, who work together with our team in order to achieve our goal. In terms of instruments, we currently have Satar, Duttar, Tembur, Ghijek, Rawap, Bass Rawap, Ney (fluet), Dap, Violin, Guitar, Klarnet and keyboard. By using those instruments above, we are here to perform and create our folk and classic melodies as well as Uyghur pop songs. In our ensemble, we continue playing our classical melodies is one of the most important principles which we will carry on forever.
UEE missions are:
1. To keep Uyghur’s unique but endangered culture alive and pass it on to the next generation. In addition to Uyghur music, regularly organise Uyghur culture exhibitions.
2. To conduct public performances or shows of Uyghur folk music, particularly a type of Uyghur folk music form called 12 Muqam.
3. To collect, preserve and conduct research on the Uyghur music and lyrics that are prohibited by the Chinese authorities.
4. To arrange Uyghur music courses to Uyghur children living in diaspora and promotion of Uyghur culture to democratic countries around the world.
