Is Artificial Intelligence, Really / Actually Intelligence in the sense of a human being or a mouse or a gorilla or dolphin or a whale being intelligent? Can we invent / create something (or "someone" some day) that would be more intelligent than us? Does a sophisticated system of fairly basic even if numerous algorithms such as what one may use to beat the best chess players in the world constituteor represent intelligence? Given that an average human brain has billions of neurons with zillions of axonal and dendritic connections and that as far as I know the best artificial simulation of nervous systems currently available is basically 100's of neurons with limited connections - equivalent to one of the simplest nervous systems that of a little worm or so - how do you think the current AI hype - both positive and negative including fears of AI - correspond to reality or that of the reality in the foreseeable future? Of course we all (should) know: Prediction is hard, especially about the future - (and, in a way, actually about the past as well just talk to honest historians and historical sociologists). If you didn't know that that means you didn't attend the Master Class of Mithat on predictive models. I did circa ten years ago. It was a privilege and an honor to attend the course and have a drink or two afterwards with Mithat, John and Babak Oskooei, the Magic Trio of Predictive Survival Models even if they have all moved to greener pastures dealing with clinical trials. I actually don't know where John is right now. Anyone? Too bad for us poor epidemiologists.
