Self Surveillance, a short film about me, by me🖤
My film is a Grunge, avant-garde film that highlights the concept of ‘purpose' being defined by spirituality and especially the concept of spiritual solitude.
The film explores different spaces where the Subject embodies their environment, the film takes us through the contrasting world of the protagonist both from their personal perspective and also from an invasive lens.
The film aims to showcase one going through the process of grasping self actualisation through the absurdity and fixation over the “self”.
The film stars one individual going through the motions of life, mostly in their "subjective world", although serving as a representation of many others.
The short film starts of with said subject experiencing limbo and disconnect from their environment, at the attempt of relieving the self from the heinous cycle of dissatisfaction, one is inevitably lead to Solitude. The power of being Alone yet surrounded by art and a culture that inevitably shapes that “Aloneness”.
The film uses abstract conventions to create an atmosphere that invites vulnerability.
The film uses old Afrocentric magazines to highlight the idea of evolution as it showcases the Magazine covers from different Era’s while also highlighting the subjects own internalised evolution.. the use of old classics magazine covers serves as a symbolism of all the things that have happened in the past and how they shape the Subject’s reality.
The Film aims to create a fixation on Spiritual Solitude being the freeing agent from the notions of existentialism and Limbo.
The film aims to highlight the importance of practising self reflexivity and internalised solitude through self actualisation.
"Purpose" is physically represented by The admiration of Art as we see the protagonist’s relationship with their environment.
The film hopes to take the audience through a journey that's relatable yet complex, almost absurdly so. Considering that the film uses minimalistic approaches, I aim to enhance these simple spaces to fit into a more mystical and grunge world in the film.
The Short Film also makes reference to the play/film The Road To Mecca' by Athol Fugard;
which is based on a true story of a women who was in search for her "mecca" much like the concept being followed in my film about the protagonist yearning to fulfill their greatest
Purpose.
