The Basics of Light Therapy:
The use of light therapy to treat skin conditions is not a new concept. Dermatologists have long used light therapy to treat a variety of skin conditions such as psoriasis, skin cancer and vitiligo. Modern LED devices claim to fight redness, acne, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, wound healing, anti-aging and even hair loss. However, in this video, we focus mainly on the anti-aging and anti-acne effects.
The basic principle of phototherapy involves the action of different wavelengths of light on the skin. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is harmful to the skin, while visible and infrared light affect the skin at different levels. Of the visible light, blue light and red light have different effects on the skin. While blue light mainly works on the top layer of the skin, red light penetrates deeper and affects collagen production, thus providing an anti-aging effect.
Blue light and anti-acne:
Blue light has a shorter wavelength and acts mainly on the superficial layers of the skin. It is helpful for acne because blue light can penetrate into the sebaceous glands and kill acne bacteria. In addition, blue light reduces oil production and inflammation. Studies have shown that blue light therapy is effective in reducing the number of lesions in inflammatory acne. Nonetheless, blue light does not apply to non-inflammatory acne and it has limited effectiveness on this type of acne.
Red light and anti-aging:
Red light has a longer wavelength and is able to penetrate deeper into the skin. It fights wrinkles and skin aging by stimulating fibroblasts to produce collagen. Instead of causing skin damage through heat, as some devices do, red light stimulates collagen production through photobiomodulation. Studies have shown that red light increases the density of collagen in the skin and improves skin elasticity, thus reducing wrinkles. We've seen studies conducted not only in the lab, but also in actual clinical trials that validate these effects.
Pigmentation and Safety
It is important to note that blue light may stimulate melanocytes in the skin, increasing the risk of hyperpigmentation. Therefore, special care should be taken when using blue light for those with hyperpigmentation issues. Current research suggests that blue light may pose a greater risk of hyperpigmentation in people with darker skin, whereas red light does not present this problem.Avoiding these devices is recommended if you have photosensitizing conditions such as deformity slide eruption or porphyria. Overall, LED devices are safe in treating skin conditions, but the right phototherapy device should be chosen based on your individual skin type and condition.
