ولاية مطرح لها مكانتها التاريخية والحضارية القديمة؛ حيث كانت تمثل الميناء التجاري العريق لسلطنة ُعمان، وقد عُدت أسواقها التجارية آنذاك بمثابة المصدر الرئيسي لتصدير البضائع إلى مختلف الأسواق المحلية والعالمية، كما يشكل ميناء السلطان قابوس اليوم بوابة سياحية مهمة لسلطنة عمان، باستقطابه السفن السياحية الكبيرة من مختلف بقاع العالم.
يتميز سوق مطرح القديم بطابعه العمراني الفريد ومكوناته التاريخية العريقة، وبه تعرض مختلف السلع والمنتجات العمانية والمشغولات اليدوية؛ خاصة الحلي العمانية الذهبية والفضية، وهو مقصد الكثير من السياح والمهتمين بدراسة التاريخ والحضارة العمانية المجيدة.
و بحكم مكانتها التاريخية والحضارية القديمة، تعد ولاية مطرح من أهم الولايات الست لمحافظة مسقط، حيث كانت تمثل الميناء التجاري العريق لسلطنة عمان، كما إن سوقها كان بمثابة المصدر الرئيس لتصدير البضائع بأصنافها المختلفة - إلى الأسواق العمانية في مختلف أنحاء سلطنة عمان، كما يقال بأنها كانت بلاداَ زراعية ذات نخيل وأشجار وفيها أفلاج وآبار مياهها عذبة صالحة للشرب والزراعة وكانت تزود السفن بالمياه. وتضم ولاية مطرح عدداَ من المعالم الأثرية والسياحية حيث يوجد بها عدة قلاع وأسوار وأبراج وأفلاج وأودية وحدائق ومنتزهات.
وتعد قلعة مطرح - وتسمى (كوت مطرح) من أبرز القلاع الثلاثة عشر الموجودة بالولاية، ولها ستة أبراج متفرقة بنيت في عهد البرتغاليين أثناء احتلالهم لمسقط عام 1578م ، وكانت مقراً للحكم أثناء ولاية السيد سعيد بن سلطان البوسعيدي وهي تقع على الجبل المحاذي لشاطئ مطرح . ومن القلاع الأخرى : الروجة ، مطيرح الفناتيق ، جبل كلبوه ، لزم ، حكم ، الريح ، سنجوري ، الغريفة ، بحوار ، وبيت الفلج والشجيعية .
كما توجد أسوار أخرى هي: سور اللواتيا الذي تتميز أبنيته بروعة التصميم الهندسي، كما تتسم شرفاتها المطلة على الطريق البحري بالطابع الإسلامي الجميل، كذلك سور مطرح القديم، وسور جبروه. وهناك ثلاثة حدائق عامة في كل من حي الميدان التجاري والوادي الكبير وريام ، ومتحفان : متحف القوات المسلحة والمتحف الوطني وكذلك المكتبة الإسلامية، ومن أهم الحرف في هذه الولاية هي : التجارة، صياغة الذهب والفضة، وصيد الأسماك . ومن الصناعات: الحلوى العمانية، السفاف والحبال والسرود والخياطة ، الحدادة، الخوصيات، الفضيات، العطور، العنبرية، والسعفيات .

Muttrah Fort - called (Kut Muttrah) is one of the most prominent of the thirteen castles in the state. It has six separate towers. It was built during the era of the Portuguese during their occupation of Muscat in 1578 AD. It was the seat of government during the rule of Sayyid Saeed bin Sultan Al Busaidi. It is located on the mountain adjacent to Muttrah Beach. Other castles include: Al-Rujah, Mutayrih Al-Fanaitiq, Jabal Kalbuh, Lazm, Hakam, Al-Rih, Singuri, Al-Ghuraifa, Bahawar, Bayt Al-Falaj and Al-Shujaiya.
There are also other walls: Al Lawatiya Wall, whose buildings are distinguished by the splendor of geometric design, and its balconies overlooking the sea road are characterized by a beautiful Islamic character, as well as the old Muttrah Wall, and the Jabruh Wall. There are three public parks in the Al-Midan Commercial District, Al-Wadi Al-Kabir and Riyam, and two museums: the Armed Forces Museum and the National Museum, as well as the Islamic Library. Among the most important crafts in this state are: trade, gold and silversmithing, and fishing. Industries include: Omani sweets, safaf, ropes, sardines, tailoring, blacksmithing, wickerwork, silverware, perfumes, amber, and palm leaves.
