While Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay is revered as an epic, Gabbar Singh, the trigger of the tale, has an identity of its own. So much so, that even the player, Amjad Khan, couldn’t live down the character’s savage stardom. No villain has been both so feared and favoured.Amjad Khan, however was one day rudely thrown off the fast-track by a nasty accident. Though he continued to give his best shot as an actor in the following two decades, the braveheart was quietly paying the price of surgery and steroids. A tarot reader, who’d apparently predicted a dream run for Amjad post Sholay, perhaps missed revealing that his dreams were too many for an untimely exit…
Amjad was also selected as a finalist in the Filmfare Talent contest. Eventually, he was offered Sholay in 1973, on the same day son Shadab was born. Initially, Danny Denzongpa was being considered to play the cult dacoit, Gabbar Singh, in Ramesh Sippy’s all-time blockbuster. But his dates being allotted to Feroz Khan for Dharmatma (1975), Amjad turned the beneficiary. He was a fitness freak and a bull-worker enthusiast. He played badminton regularly. But post the accident, this wasn’t possible. Because of the inactivity and medications he piled on the kilos. Though a teetotaller, he smoked cigarettes. He was not a big eater but he loved mithai. He had around 30-35 mugs of tea every day. The ‘meetha monster’ as dubbed by his wife loved chocolates, rosgollas, gulab jamuns and halwas, which worsened the problem.July 27, 1994 was to spell doom. Amjad was supposed to meet someone at 7 pm. He went up to his room to change. At 7.20 pm, Shadab came down running saying, ‘Daddy’s gone cold, he’s sweating’. Amjad had fainted. Within minutes he passed away. He was only 48. Three weeks later was his wedding anniversary, which he couldn’t celebrate.
The family was in deep shock. After all, he was a devoted father. Shadab, who was 17, Ahlam, who was 14 and Seemab, just around 10, found it difficult to accept the situation. Shadab underwent a personality change. Earlier he was a carefree kid, artistic and interested in painting, sculpting… He turned aloof. A premature film debut with Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1997) didn’t help him either. Shehla developed tachycardia, a cardiac condition, 10 months after Amjad passed away. She underwent a surgical procedure to stabilize her health.
