Variegation in plants is the equivalent of vitiligo in humans. That gardeners select it for visual appeal is obvious. That naturalists reject it is natural. But the really best reason for variegation is that it allows gardeners to have a plant which in its full green form is TOO invasive and TOO vigorous.Caused by a genetic mutation, In this type of variegation, plants show two different chromosomal make-ups in a single plant, where some tissue is able to produce chlorophyll and other is not. The result is a plant with white or yellow zones intermixed with the solid green form .
Variegated indoor plants do have different care requirements from their all-green cousins.Fertiliser, light, temperature, potting mix, watering and more need a different approach when it comes to your variegated plants . However not all types of variegation, or all variegated plants, need special treatment .
In some plants variegation can be temperature-sensitive, becoming more or less variegated. Variegated African Violets and Tradescantia Blushing Maid are two that become more variegated in cooler temperatures, and less variegated at warmer times of year.On the whole however, most variegated indoor plants don't become more or less variegated at different temperatures, and should be kept in the same temperature range as their all-green counterparts.
However if you have one that's on struggle-street, keeping to the warmer end of the scale will be appreciated as warmth aids recovery, helps increase growth, and water use, reducing the risk of root rot.
Are variegated plants weaker?
Weaker growth/Failure to thrive. In fact, some variegated plants don't do as well as their unvariegated counterparts. Because variegated leaf sections don't have the chlorophyll of green sections, photosynthesis is typically less efficient, and many variegated plants show weaker growth
Variegated plants have less chlorophyll (there's only chlorophyll in the green parts of the leaves), so they arguably need more light. This is a subject that is divisive in the plant community because some people argue that the plant self-corrects the lack of chlorophyll by growing more slowly.
Can you force variegation in plants?
The good news is that it is possible to induce the production of variegated tissues in houseplants through various means including chemical mutagens (such as Ethyl methanesulfonate), exposure to ionizing radiation (such as X-Rays and Gamma Rays) and transposing genes from one plant to another.
Why are Albo plants so expensive?
Albo' plants are expensive because the coloration is caused by a natural mutation that is not genetically passed down through seeds reliably. Even cuttings do not have a 100% success rate to recreate the same variegation. Also, this plant has a slow growth rate, high demand, and limited supply.
