Challenger Deep is the deepest point in the Mariana Trench, the deepest part of the world's oceans. Located in the western Pacific Ocean, Challenger Deep is approximately 11,034 metres (36,201 feet) deep. Its name is derived from the British survey ship HMS Challenger, which first measured its depth in 1875.Due to its extreme depth and pressure, Challenger Deep is a harsh environment for life. However, recent studies have discovered that even in this extreme environment, microbial life exists. The first manned submersible to reach Challenger Deep was the Trieste in 1960.
