What is Bornahan?
Bornahan is also known as berry shower now a days. This is one of the ancient hindu traditions. It’s for kids between 1 to 2 years, but mainly for kids who have their first Makar Sankranti. On this occasion, a lot of kids are invited, mostly who are of the same age.
When Bornahan is celebrated?
Bornahan is celebrated in makar Sankranti period; it started from Makar Sankrati and goes till rath Saptami.
How Bornahan is Celebrated?
Bornahan is very cute ceremony. At this time babies are dressed in black color clothing with tilgul ornaments. The baby boy is dressed up like Bal Krishna and Its a baby girl then she is dressed up like radha. Then ladies of that family or friends perform aukshan (means they do aarti wishing baby's long life).
then the showering starts, in that showering baby is bathed with berries, small sugarcane cubes, chocolate, puffed rice, coins, tilgul.
And the invited kids are supposed to collect all this and feast on it. This day, all the invited kids actually loot the sweets from the bath. Kids get really excited as it's like a competition on Who collect more. They feel their pockets, tiny hands and little mouth too. The house is filled with sweet laughter and fun. After this, the kids get Some snacks and gift as planned by family.
All the family members related and friends bless the baby with long life, prosperity and good health. It's a saying that this is ceremony takes away all negativity energy from the child and make the child healthy and happy and keep the child safe for the future. Indian traditions like this make us interact with each other and make our bond stronger. At such times, the grandparents who sometimes get ignored at home feel better as their blessing is counted along with the rest of the people. And we must say if any grandchildren receive the blessing from their grandparents, they are really lucky. Isn't it?
