A "fruit fly pheromone trap" is a good and safe way to reduce the number of fruit flies. This method uses a pheromone or parapheromone to attract the male fruit flies into a trap where they are killed. Even though only the male flies are killed, this makes it more difficult for the females to find a mate to make more maggots.
Materials required
• Plastic bottle/jar 1 litre
• Latex gloves
• Galvanized utility wire
Methodology
Make 10 to 12 holes into an old 1 liter plastic bottle or 3 holes on each side of 1 liter ice cream container, to allow flies to enter. Heat a small piece of metal to make the holes easily. Put a wire from the cover to suspend the bait. Secure the pheromone dispenser aligns with the entrance holes inside the trap. Make a rectangular opening into the lower part of the container for removing the flies caught. Half-fill the trap with soapy water. Put bait in the pheromone dispenser or suspend the pheromone capsule from the lid using string or wire. Close the container. Attach the trap to a bamboo or wooden stake or hang on branch of a tree. Place traps for different pests at least 3 meters apart. If traps are used for monitoring the pests, 2-3 traps are enough for 1 ha field.
No. of traps per acre
• Cue Lure: Melon Fly - Use 2-3 traps/acre
• Methyl Eugenol: Oriental Fruit Fly - Use 3-5 traps/acre
• Trimedlure: mediterranean fruit fly - Use 3-5 traps/acre
Methyl eugenol (4-allyl-1,2-dimethoxybenzene-carboxylate) and cue-lure [4-(p-acetoxyphenyl)-2-butanone] are highly attractive kairomone lures to oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel), and melon fly, B. cucurbitae (Coquillett), respectively. Plastic bottle traps were evaluated as dispensers for methyl eugenol and cue-lure for suppression of the 2 fruit flies.
Old discarded plastic bottles/ containers could be reused in making fruit fly traps. Though such traps are available in market with a selling price ranging from 300 to 500 INR, however they can also be prepared in home with nearly no cost using waste plastic. Some liquid bait like juice, cider vinegar, or simply sugar solution could be used to lure the flies and once they are inside the bottle they can’t get back their way out. Such traps are good to use in kitchen gardens and home gardens. On another level, annihilation could also be performed using Methyl eugenol solution by which fly population drastically falls within a single generation. Further, insecticide dipped cotton also controls the flies by killing and collecting them inside the bottle. A single bottle could be reused many times, and also prevents pesticides consumption which is a risk in kitchen gardens and ecologically unsafe practice.
