Tarikh Episode 805
Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons and events of History in Hindi. In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about The Darvaza Gas Crater. Often called the "Door to Hell" or "Gates of Hell," is a natural gas field in Turkmenistan that has been burning continuously since 1971. Located in the Karakum Desert, the crater is about 69 metres wide and 30 metres deep. The fiery phenomenon began when Soviet geologists accidentally drilled into a gas pocket during an exploration.
The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, creating a large crater. To prevent the spread of methane gas, the geologists set the gas on fire, expecting it to burn out in a few weeks. However, the fire has been burning for over five decades, making it a unique and eerie landmark. The crater emits a warm glow, visible from miles away, and has become a popular tourist destination despite its remote location. Surrounded by the desolate desert, the constantly burning flames create an otherworldly atmosphere, drawing visitors fascinated by the site’s strange beauty and its symbolic connection to nature’s untamed power.
