खाटू श्याम जी की कथा:
बर्बरीक, महाभारत के महान योद्धा भीम के पोते और घटोत्कच के पुत्र थे। बचपन से ही उनमें अद्भुत शक्ति और वीरता थी। बर्बरीक ने युद्ध कला और भगवान शिव की घोर तपस्या करके तीन अमोघ बाण प्राप्त किए थे, जिनके बल पर वह किसी भी युद्ध को पलभर में समाप्त कर सकते थे। उन्हें "तीन बाणधारी" के नाम से भी जाना जाता था।
जब महाभारत का युद्ध आरंभ होने वाला था, बर्बरीक ने अपनी माता से वचन दिया था कि वह हमेशा युद्ध में हारने वाली पक्ष का साथ देंगे। इसके साथ ही वे कुरुक्षेत्र के युद्ध में भाग लेने के लिए निकले। श्रीकृष्ण ने जब बर्बरीक के इस अद्भुत पराक्रम और निश्चय के बारे में सुना, तो उन्होंने उसका परीक्षण करने का निश्चय किया।
श्रीकृष्ण बर्बरीक के सामने एक साधु के वेश में प्रकट हुए और उनसे पूछा कि वे किस पक्ष का साथ देंगे। बर्बरीक ने कहा कि वह हारने वाली सेना का साथ देंगे। श्रीकृष्ण जानते थे कि बर्बरीक की शक्ति इतनी महान थी कि यदि वह कौरवों का साथ देते, तो पांडव कभी युद्ध नहीं जीत पाते।
इसलिए श्रीकृष्ण ने बर्बरीक से उनकी बलिदानी भक्ति की परीक्षा ली और उनसे उनके सिर का दान मांगा। बर्बरीक ने बिना किसी झिझक के अपना सिर श्रीकृष्ण को अर्पित कर दिया। भगवान कृष्ण ने उनकी इस महान भक्ति से प्रसन्न होकर उन्हें वरदान दिया कि कलियुग में तुम श्री खाटू श्याम के नाम से पूजे जाओगे और जो भी सच्चे मन से तुम्हारी भक्ति करेगा, उसकी सभी इच्छाएँ पूर्ण होंगी।
बर्बरीक का सिर युद्ध समाप्त होने तक एक पहाड़ी पर रखा गया, जहाँ से उन्होंने पूरे युद्ध को देखा। कालांतर में उनका सिर राजस्थान के खाटू गाँव में मिला, जहाँ अब खाटू श्याम जी का प्रसिद्ध मंदिर है। भक्तगण उन्हें भगवान श्याम के रूप में पूजते हैं और मानते हैं कि वे अपने भक्तों की सभी मनोकामनाएँ पूर्ण करते हैं।

The story of Khatu Shyam Ji:
Barbarik was the grandson of Bhima, the great warrior of Mahabharata and the son of Ghatotkach. He had amazing power and bravery since childhood. Barbarik had obtained three infallible arrows by learning the art of war and by doing severe penance of Lord Shiva, with the power of which he could end any war in a moment. He was also known as "Teen Baandhaari".
When the war of Mahabharata was about to begin, Barbarik had promised his mother that he would always support the losing side in the war. With this he set out to participate in the battle of Kurukshetra. When Shri Krishna heard about this amazing valor and determination of Barbarik, he decided to test him.
Shri Krishna appeared before Barbarik in the guise of a sadhu and asked him which side he would support. Barbarik said that he would support the losing army. Shri Krishna knew that Barbarik's power was so great that if he had supported the Kauravas, the Pandavas would never have won the war.
So Shri Krishna tested Barbarik's sacrificial devotion and asked him for the donation of his head. Barbarik offered his head to Shri Krishna without any hesitation. Lord Krishna, pleased with his great devotion, blessed him that in Kaliyuga you will be worshiped by the name of Shri Khatu Shyam and whoever worships you with a true heart, all his wishes will be fulfilled.
Barbarik's head was kept on a hill till the war ended, from where he watched the entire war. Later his head was found in Khatu village of Rajasthan, where now there is a famous temple of Khatu Shyam Ji. Devotees worship him as Lord Shyam and believe that he fulfills all the wishes of his devotees.
