Bangladesh’s major rivers, estuaries, and coastal areas have different sizes of chars.
Usually, due to obstruction of the river flow, silt accumulates and forms a char or island.
Usually, char emerges from the rivers with more width.
In our country, the Padma and Jamuna rivers have the most and largest chars.
Each of the large chars is 3-4 km long.
Most of the chars are formed as sand chars.
These sand chars have been formed through the movement and erosion of numerous rivers flowing through this country.
The vast sand char looks like a barren desert.
But over time, the form of the soil changes, and gradually the chars become habitable for plants and animals.
Small grasses grow in the large sandy areas of the chars that emerge in the freshwater rivers of Bangladesh.
Due to these plants, the soil sometimes becomes firmer, allowing other plants to grow.
With so many grasses, small grasslands eventually form in these chars.
Reeds grow abundantly in the grasslands in some areas.
Different kinds of birds can be seen in these grasslands and reed forests that naturally develop in the chars.
Grey Francolin birds roam in these grasslands.
This shy bird quickly hides in the grass when it sees people.
Small birds like Zitting cisticola, Munia, Warbler, Pipit, Lark, and Grassbird live in the grasslands of chars.
These birds mostly roam in small flocks.
They also have diversity in their food habits.
Depending on the species, these birds feed on young grass shoots, seeds, grains, and various insects.
Besides, many waterfowl flock to the chars.
Among them are Sandpiper, Wagtail, Plover, Godwit, Lapwing, Pipit, Gull, Tern, Heron, Cormorant and so on.
