আজকে আমরা শুনতে চলেছি বিখ্যাত ব্রিটিশ শিকারি যিনি ভারতে এসে বসবাস করেছিলেন সেই জিম করবেটের শিকার কাহিনী অবলম্বনে লেখা শিকার কাহিনী পানারের মানুষখেকো চিতা।
জিম করবেট যিনি জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিলেন ২৫ শে জুলাই ১৮৭৫ সালে এবং তিনি ছিলেন একজন ব্রিটিশ শিকারি। তিনি তার জীবনে বহু মানুষখেকো বাঘ ও চিতা শিকার করেছিলেন। তার বিখ্যাত কয়েকটি শিকার কাহিনী হল কুমায়ুনের মানুষখেকো,রুদ্রপ্রয়াগের মানুষখেকো চিতা ,মুক্তেশ্বরের মানুষখেকো, পানার মানুষখেকো চিতা এবং মন্দিরের বাঘ। তিনি দক্ষিণ ভারতের জনপ্রিয় শিকারি হয়ে উঠেছিলেন তখনকার সময়। তিনি মারা যান 19 শে এপ্রিল 1955 সালে।
পানারের অঞ্চল এ একটি মানুষ খেকো চিতা নাকি উপদ্রব করছে, এই কথাটা শুনে জিম করবেট বেরিয়ে পড়েছিলেন নৈনিতাল থেকে। চিতাটি ছিল খুবই চালাক। সে ওই অঞ্চলে প্রায় 400র বেশি মানুষকে মেরে ফেলেছিল। চিতাটি সাধারণত রাতে শিকার করতে বের হত এবং ওই অঞ্চলের গরু ,ছাগল,মোষ এগুলোকে মেরে ফেলত। করবেটের এই চিতাটা কে স্বীকার করতে গিয়ে বেশ বেগ পেতেও হয়েছিল ।তার এই শিকার কাহিনী তুলে ধরা হলো অডিওর মাধ্যমে।
Edward James Corbett CIE VD (25 July 1875 - 19 April 1955) was an Indian-born British hunter, tracker, naturalist, and author who hunted a number of man-eating tigers and leopards in the Indian subcontinent. Edward James Corbett was born on 25 July 1875 of British ancestry in the town of Nainital in Kumaon division, Uttarakhand, India. From a very early age, Jim was fascinated by the forests and the wildlife around his home in Kaladhungi. Through frequent excursions, he learned to identify most animals and birds by their calls. Over time, he became a good tracker and hunter. During his life, Corbett tracked and shot several leopards and tigers; about a dozen were well documented man-eaters. Corbett provided estimates of human casualties in his books, including Man-Eaters of Kumaon, The Man-Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag, and The Temple Tiger and More Man-Eaters of Kumaon and The man eating leopard of paner . The first designated man-eating tiger he killed, the Champawat Tiger. Other notable man-eaters he killed were the Talla-Des man-eater, the Mohan man-eater, the Thak man-eater, the Muktesar man-eater and the Chowgarh tigress.
