Fishery Ghat, Cox's Bazar is basically a fish landing center. It is located at North Nuniyachhara on the west bank of the Bankkhali River on the east side of the Airport Road. A few more such landing centers have been found on both banks of the Bakkhali. However, this fish landing center or Fishery Ghat adjacent to Cox's Bazar Airport is the largest.
The Fishery Ghat was constructed in the financial year 1965-66. It is a self-financing organization of the Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation run under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock of the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
The Fishery Ghat, the biggest fish market of the Tourist City Cox'sbazar, is one of the leading Hilsa hubs of the country. The ghat wakes up before sunrise every day. The whole Fishery Ghat became the mouthpiece of the people of different classes and professions including fishermen, stockiest and wholesalers.
A few years ago, tourists did not see much at this wharf. But in recent years the number of tourist walks has increased at a significant rate. At present, tourists flock here throughout the year. It increases several times during the tourist season. Some come just to see, some come to study and research. In particular, the ghat is a popular research center for zoology students.
For people who prefer peace and tranquility, the hustle and bustle during peak hours at the market could feel almost unbearable. But for most people, this popular fish market is a virtual attraction.
The silver fishes, caught from the Bay of Bengal, mostly land at this messy fish station, to be delivered to different locations around the country. From here, the fishes embark on another journey of hundreds of kilometers through the great Bengal plains before reaching the dinner tables in various districts like Dhaka, Chattogram, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Khulna.
For fishermen, vendors, and fish-related livelihoods, Fishery Ghat is a center of happiness and hope. When this place flaunts abundant supplies, you see happiness radiating from the faces of the people here.
At present, there are more than 5,000 fishing boats in Cox's Bazar district.The amount of fish extracted from the district's annual marine sources is about 140,000 metric tons - the lion's share of which is marketed through this fishery ghat.
