The Buriganga River is a tide‐influenced river forming the western and southern boundaries of Dhaka City, the economic and political capital of Bangladesh. Originating from the Dhaleshwari River through the Karanatali tributary, the Buriganga's average width and depth are 400m and 10m respectively.
The Buriganga River, regarded as the most significant of all, is considered Dhaka's lifeline. This 18 km long river, situated in the south of the city, has become the water source used by the city residents for bathing, drinking, irrigation, and industrial purposes
Dhaka city, established by the Mughals on the banks of the Buriganga, is surrounded by six rivers like a garland. There are Balu and Sitalakhya on the eastern side, Turag and Buriganga on the western side, Tongi Khal to the north and Dhaleshwari to the south.

Its average depth is 7.6 metres (25 ft) and its maximum depth is 18 metres (58 ft). It ranks among the most polluted rivers in the country.
