Hypoglycemia occurs when your blood sugar level drops below normal levels, usually below 70 mg/dL. It can happen for a number of reasons, including:
Not eating enough: Skipping meals or not eating enough food can cause hypoglycemia, especially if you take medication to lower your blood sugar.
Taking too much insulin or other diabetes medications: If you take too much insulin or other diabetes medications, it can cause your blood sugar to drop too low.
Increased physical activity: Exercising more than usual or doing strenuous physical activity without eating enough can cause hypoglycemia.
Drinking alcohol: Drinking alcohol can cause hypoglycemia, especially if you don't eat enough food or take medication to lower your blood sugar.
If you experience symptoms of hypoglycemia, such as shakiness, dizziness, sweating, confusion, or weakness, it's important to treat it promptly. Here's what you can do:
Eat or drink something with sugar: Consuming a small amount of sugar can quickly raise your blood sugar level. Good options include a few pieces of hard candy, a tablespoon of honey or sugar, or a glass of fruit juice.
Eat a snack: After consuming sugar, it's important to eat a snack that contains complex carbohydrates and protein to help stabilize your blood sugar levels. Good options include a piece of fruit with nut butter, a small handful of nuts, or a slice of whole-grain bread with cheese.
Test your blood sugar: After treating hypoglycemia, it's important to test your blood sugar level to ensure that it has returned to normal.
If you experience frequent episodes of hypoglycemia, it's important to speak with your healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause and develop a plan to prevent future episodes. They may adjust your medication or recommend dietary changes to help manage your blood sugar levels.
