Justice Ranjit Singh is a distinguished former judge of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana, with a notable career heading various committees and serving as Chairman of the Debt Recovery Appellate Tribunal in New Delhi, overseeing the states of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi. Initially, a product of the historic S.S.S.S Khalsa Senior Secondary School in Amritsar, he graduated from Khalsa College Amritsar and obtained his law degree from Punjab University in Chandigarh. Remarkably, after coming across an advertisement for direct entry into the judicial department of the army known as Judge Advocate General, he voluntarily retired as a Major in 1986 to pursue a second innings in the legal profession, thus embarking on a unique journey from the army to a legal career by choice.
In 2015, the sacred Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji suffered desecration in District Faridkot, Punjab, which deeply impacted the Sikh community and the entire nation. The distressing incidents, including affixing of posters and scattering of holy Angs of Saroop of Guru Granth Sahib Ji, left indelible scars that still resonate today. Tragically, the sacrilege was followed by the firing of police personnel on innocent protesters, resulting in loss of life and escalating public anguish. Despite investigations by SIT and a former judge, the pursuit of justice remained elusive, prompting the Congress government, under the leadership of Capt Amarinder Singh, to establish a commission chaired by Justice Ranjit Singh to comprehensively examine the cases of sacrilege.

A former high court judge, who led a solitary commission of inquiry established to investigate the acts of sacrilege and subsequent police firing in 2015, has attributed the theft and desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib at a gurdwara in Faridkot, as well as the display of derogatory posters, to the Dera Sacha Sauda and its adherents. Furthermore, Justice Ranjit Singh (Retd) has implicated then chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and retired IPS officer Sumedh Singh Saini, who served as the Punjab Police chief at the time, for their involvement in the police firing on peaceful demonstrators, resulting in the deaths of two individuals.
During the unveiling of his book titled 'The Sacrilege', which details the events and his investigative efforts, Justice Singh addressed the media, shedding light on his findings.
Following the ascent of the Congress government in 2017, then Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh initiated the establishment of the Justice Singh Commission to investigate a series of sacrilege incidents involving religious texts. These included occurrences at village Burj Jawahar Singh Wala, Bargari, and the firing incidents at Kotkapura and Behbal Kalan in 2015.
According to Justice Singh, the probe's findings attributed the theft of the Guru Granth Sahib from village Burj Jawahar Singh Wala in June 2015, as well as the subsequent posting of derogatory posters in the same village in September of that year, to followers of the Dera. Additionally, the investigation connected the desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib, involving torn pages found scattered in Bargari village on October 12, 2015, to the same group.
Justice Singh highlighted the connection between the incidents of sacrilege and the controversial pardon (issued by the Akal Takht and later revoked) to Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, who is presently serving a life sentence for rape and murder. He stated that these events stemmed from actions dating as far back as 2007, when the Akal Takht had issued a hukamnama directing the Sikh community to sever all ties with the Dera chief and his followers due to his alleged blasphemous imitation of Guru Gobind Singh during a ceremony similar to the creation of Khalsa, and were linked to the release of Gurmeet Ram Rahim's movie "Messenger of God."
