Prahlada is described as a saintly boy, known for his innocence and bhakti towards Vishnu. Despite the abusive nature of his father, Hiranyakashipu, he continues to worship Vishnu. He is considered a mahajan , or great devotee, by followers of Vaishnava traditions. A treatise is attributed to him in the Bhagavata Purana, in which Prahlada describes the process of his loving worship towards Vishnu.The majority of stories in the Puranas regarding him are based on the activities of Prahlada as a young boy, and he is usually depicted as such in paintings and illustrations.

ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਹਿਰਣਯਕਸ਼ਿਪੂ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂੰ ਦਾ ਮਹਾਨ ਭਗਤ ਸੀ। ਹਿਰਨਯਕਸ਼ਯਪ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਪਸੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂੰ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਉਸਨੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਕਈ ਵਾਰ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ ਪਰ ਹਰ ਵਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਨੂੰ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਨੇ ਬਚਾ ਲਿਆ। ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂੰ ਨੇ ਨਰਸਿਮ੍ਹਾ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਆ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਰਦਾਨ ਦਾ ਪਾਲਣ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਿਰਣਯਕਸ਼ਯਪੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
