calcium arrived from latin word calc which means chuna in hindi language. calcium is present in heavy amount in chuna
In our body
99% calcium is present in bone and teeth so it is important for their strength.
From remaining 1%
0.9% is present in cells
0.1% is present in blood
blood level is always normal.
Even if blood calcium is normal, its not necessarily the same case in bone.
So blood calcium level is not a good test to show calcium level in bone.
DAILY REQUIREMENT
Normal adult needs 600-800 mg calcium per day
Requirement is more in growing kids, pregnant and lactating women.
CALCIUM SOURCES
Milk and milk products like cheese, paneer
Vegetable - green leafy and cabbage
Daal - rajma, ragi
Fruit - khajoor, banana, sitaphal
Calcium also help in controlling bp and cholesterol
It also reduces chances of colon cancer
Helps improving heart health
Myth - kidney stone - calcium doesnt cause kidney stone in most cases as these are largely made up of oxalate crystals.
CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTATION
2 types
Calcium carbonate and Calcium citrate
Carbonate is more available and cheap, however, 4-5 % people doesnt tolerate well and may develop stomach pain, bloating, constipation
carbonate is taken with food since it is acid dependant
However, citrate can be taken anytime.
If antacid taken, carbonate gets absorbed less
CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D3
Calcium is very closely attached to vitamin d3 since calcium is absorbed with the help of vitamin d3 only.
vitamin d is made in skin from sunlight.
IMPORTANCE OF VITAMIN D3
Improves over all health, immunity, prevents mood disorders and helps maintaning heart and lung health.
FORMS OF VITAMIN D
2 types - Active and Inactive
Inactive form - cholecalciferol, which is converted to active. it is cheap, less chances of reaction and doesn't need monitoring
If defficient - pulse dosage of 60000 iu per week can be given according to doctors advise
active form - alpha calidiol which is given in liver patient
calcitriol which is given in kidney patient
dose 0.35ug
It is costly and requires monitoring.
