In this episode, Historian V Sriram is talking about the history of Sir Thomas Munro. Major-General Sir Thomas Munro (27 May 1761 - 6 July 1827) was a Scottish soldier and colonial administrator. He served as an East India Company Army officer and statesman, in addition to also being the governor of Madras Presidency. He loved India and he loved Indians. V. Sriram is narrating the kind heart of Sir Thomas Munro. He is also telling us about how his memorial statue was established at Madras (Now Chennai). Even after the independence, his statue is remaining with us, because of Munro's noble heart that is recognized by India's last Governor-General Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, popularly known as Rajaji.

இராஜாஜி பாமரன் படிக்க கூடாது என்று சொல்லவில்லை. அவர்கள் பள்ளி சென்று விட்டு வந்த பின்னர் அவர்கள் வம்சாவளியை சேர்ந்தவர்கள் செய்த தொழிலை கற்றுக் கொண்டால் குடும்ப வருமானத்திற்கு பொருள் ஈட்டலாம் என்று சொன்னதை அரசியல் காரணங்களுக்காக திரித்து பிரசாரம் செய்தார்கள் அன்றைய காலகட்டத்தில் என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது அதுதான் உண்மை விஷயம் கூட. இன்று பல கைத்தொழில் நிபுணத்துவம் உள்ளவர்கள் இல்லாமல் போய்விட்டது.

Periodically the present generation of Monroe visit Sri Raghavevdra Math in Mantralayam .Here Monroe had a conversation with Sri Raghavendra in Samadhi regarding Non payment of Tax.Monroe was collector of Bellary then.Also Prediction was made that he will be reaching top post.One of his cousin was John Monroe Resident of Travancore.He also was a kind soul.At the time of Doctrine of lapse Resident was asked by Viceroy whether a son was born to Queen who held power.Monroe was under heavy pressure from Madras Governor and Viceroy to report. Although still therr was time for delivery Monroe went to Padmanabhaswamy temple and told Hod that he is going to report to Governor that a son has born to Queen. If that doesn't happen then he will bladt the idol with Cannon! Son was born and he became famous as SwatiThirunal Maharaja. Hence Travancore kingdom was not annexed by British.

I learnt from my elders, as you have rightly said that Sir Thomas Munroe was the only Governor General who had any concern and sympathy for Indians. Hello sir I thank you greatly for your brief history about Thomas Monroe and about the statue. Why because from my school days I use to watch this statue. I have even made it in my WhatsApp icon. For many many years a question was going on in my mind until now about the statue"why such a huge great warrior like person is sitting on the horse without a saddle, why the sculpture did like that". Only after watching this RU-vid video I got the answer for my question. Since I am living near by the statue. Every day I use to pass by the statue. There was always a thirst for knowing about the statue. Now I am peaceful after watching this video. I thank you once again greatly.

Sir Thomas Munro died of a virulent form of Cholera that killed scores of people around Ceded districts (present day Bellary area). He was held in high esteem by people of those districts and hence he wanted to meet them before he left India for United Kingdom permanently. Many of his friends warned him not to go there because of Cholera epidemic that was sweeping that area yet he decided to go there. It is said he met common people at his camp around 9 am in the morning and around 2pm his personal physician informed that he had contracted Cholera (a very infectious disease) . By 9 pm on the same day he died there. In those days there was no vaccine/medicine for cholera. Till very recently many farmers around Bellary and Andhra used to name their children as Munrolappa in reverence of Sir Thomas Munro

For too long I too believed that the sculptor had jumped to death after claiming over the statue, for having forgotten to sculpt the stirrups. When I told this story to one of my colleagues he explained to me the significance of not using the saddle and the stirrups. For exhibiting the equestrian skills the riders all over the globe , used to trot and canter without stirrups and saddle. Monroe sitting majestically on the horse with no stirrups and saddle is a tribute to his horsemanship. Monroe 's illustrious career includes his stint as sub- collector in Bellari, Divisional Commissioner, Belgaum and finally as Governor of Madras. His spiritual encounter that he had with Guru Raghavendra Swamy at Mantralayam is recorded in the Fort St. George's Gazette. No wonder Rajaji asked our Administrators to learn and emulate the sterling qualities of Monroe.

More importantly it was Munro who introduced the "Ryotwari system" of taxation in the South, which paved the way for much of the later economic development of southern India, particularly Tamil Nadu. In the North the British introduced the zamindari system of taxation from which they are yet to come out fully. That's the main reason his statue is still stands tall in Chennai/Madras. Please do a supplementary video to this one detailing his contribution to the Ryotwari system of taxation.

Mr.Sriram , Thank you for your in-depth study about this iconic man, Sir Thomas Munro. There is also an anecdote. While returning from Mantralayam after settling some disputes, he happened to see a celestial rope at Kanti near Cuddapah, AP. When he asked the localites there about the rope tied between two hills, they were astonished and said it was made by Sri Anjaneya Swami and would be visible only to those who would attain moksha soon. And therefore, he died with in a few weeks after this incident. I don't know how far it is true.

Rajaji was CM of TN from 1952 to 54...ICS was replaced by IAS in 1947 after Independence... What he says is correct...

rajaji was the real Conspirator இராஜாஜி அரசாங்க பதவி மக்களுக்கு பயன்படும் வகையில் உழைக்க வேண்டும் என்று மன்றோ சொன்னதை அனைத்து ias அதிகாரிகளும் சொல்லி இருக்கலாம். ஆனால் அதே இராஜாஜி அந்த வழியை பின்பற்றாமல் அரசாங்க பதவியை பயன்படுத்தி தமிழர்கள் படிக்க கூடாது என்று 12000 பள்ளிகளை மூடிய கொடுங்கோலனாக இருந்ததால் இராஜாச்சீ ஆனார். காமாராஜரை தோற்க்கடிக்க பல இடைஞ்சல் செய்து தலை கீழாக நின்ற ஆள். எல்லாவற்றையும் முறியடித்து காமராஜர் அந்த ஆள் மூடிய 12000 பள்ளிகளில் 8000 பள்ளிகளை திறந்து வைத்து தமிழர்களை படிக்க வைத்தார் . அதனாலோ என்னவோ அதே சாலையில் குதிரை சிலை அருகிலேயே ஜிம்கானா க்ளப் வாசலிலேயே காமராஜருக்கு அறிஞர் அண்ணா அவர்கள் ஒரு சிலை வைத்தார். இன்றும் உள்ளது.

No doubt Rajaji did wrong to Satyamurthy n in his support to 1967 DMK. But certainly he's not a caatiest. His friend Ramaswamy naicken always had some faithful in congress Am a follower of Kamaraj even now but never degrade Rajaji like you
