00:00 Intro Story
01:20 Kidney Intro. Kidney is an important organ. Apart from filtering it does many other important jobs. One in seven people have kidney problems. But many don’t know about it. Because in early stages there are no symptoms.
02:23 Where is it?
Kidney is approximately your fist size organ. There are two kidneys. Just below the rib cage on either side.
02:37 Filtering
This is the first job of kidney. Blood enters kidneys through renal arteries. Then it goes into tiny filtering units called “nephrons”. There blood gets filtered, excess water and toxins are removed as urine. Then blood goes back to heart through renal veins.
There are one million nephrons in a single kidney. It filters 180 liters of blood every day. The whole blood volume is filtered 40 times in a day.
03:18 Vitamin D is activated in kidneys. It is important for calcium absorption. Calcium is important for bone health.
03:29 Erythropoietin hormone is secreted from kidneys . This is important for red blood cell production.
03:45 Another important hormone renin secreted from kidneys. This hormone is Important for Maintaining fluids And electrolytes to maintain Normal blood pressure.
03:56 Importance of Diagnosing Early
Chronic kidney disease is a chronic condition . It progresses slowlyOver many years. In earlier stages there are no symptoms. When it progresses to advanced stage only symptoms appear. In earlier stages we need to do blood tests to know the kidney function. When we do blood creatinine levels we can calculate glomerular filtration rate. GFR. Baaed on that we can come to know the percentage of kidney function.
05:24 Urine tests in kidney failure
05:35 Who are all at higher risk of developing kidney failure.
05:41 Number one cause is diabetes mellitus
06:11 Then high blood pressure
06:43 Aging. Above 60 we need monitor kidney function.
06:55 Obesity and metabolic syndrome
07:18 Heart diseases
07:42 Analgesic kidney disease. Pain killers. OTC medicines can cause this.
07:51 Autoimmune diseases. SLE. IgA nephropathy
08:06 Polycystic kidney disease
08:14 Pyelonephritis. Kidney stones. Obstruction.
08:30 Smoking
8:34 Heavy metals. Ayurvedic and alternative medicines
08:57 Symptoms
09:00 Tiredness
09:31 Insomnia- Difficulty in sleeping
10:00 Dry skin itching
10:26 Foamy urine. Blood in urine
10:35 Face leg swelling
11:03 Muscle cramps
11:12 When the disease is so advanced these life threatening symptoms appear.
Breathing difficulty
Irregular heart beats
Coma, death
12:12 Treatment options
Bp medicine
Diuretics
Calcium supplements
EPO erythropoietin
Diet modifications
Dialysis
Kidney transplant
14:12 Final word
So it’s important to have a healthy diet and exercise regularly. So that we can avoid diabetes mellitus high BP, obesity and metabolic syndrome. If you are already diagnosed to have any of these conditions, it’s important to have proper control over the disease and a regular blood work up for kidney function so that we can avoid kidney function progressively going down.
