Short Story of Ponniyin selvan:
The hiding Pandyas decide to kill the bed-ridden Chola king and two young Chola Princes at the same time and try to put a puppet Prince on throne, only to end with a little success.
Unlike other novels, it’s much difficult to put the whole story in a single line. This is because the story has multiple starting and multiple ending points. It’s a fictional story based on historical events. It revolves around multiple characters and the story is about what happens to all of them in a period of one year. So drafting a one-liner is not possible..
I believe that the above one-liner gives justice to the gigantic novel. I’ll explain the one-liner in a bit detail so that it would makes more sense.
Four years before the story of Ponniyin Selvan begins, Cholas defeat Pandyas in a war in which the Pandya king is beheaded by Chola Prince Aditya Karikalan. The Pandyan associates plot a plan to avenge the death and re-establish the Pandya empire. A four year old son of Pandyan King lives under their protection.
One of their female associates Nandini who is known for her beauty marries an old Chola minister who is highly influential and loyal to King. Nandini’s presence in Chola palace helps the Pandyan associates a lot.
They decide to kill the King and two Princes on the same day, which would lead to the empire being handed over to the King’s cousin Madurantaka who is just as old age as other prince (as he was born to his parents at a very old age). Madurantaka did not possess any skills required for a king and also nodded anything that Nandini would say. The Pandyas think that such a favorable situation would lead to re-emergence of Pandyan empire.
Out of their three targets, they succeed in killing only one. The author ties a knot there by not revealing how exactly that target was killed. That’s open ended. But they miss the other two targets. At the end, the king decides to retire and want his surviving son to take up the responsibility of ruling the country. But the son has another plan.\
