Senior Editor Telakapalli Ravi comments on the Untangling the political implications of Patna HC nod for Bihar’s caste-based survey. Telakapalli expects the judgment is likely to boost the political fortunes of ruling coalition parties such as the Janata Dal (United) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal, both of which claim to represent marginalised communities. In the case of SCs and STs, caste is the basis, but for BCs, economic status has also been considered by introducing a creamy layer criterion in addition to caste. For the first time in history, the BJP government has provided 10 percent more reservation than STs to all upper castes on the basis of poverty, irrespective of their caste. This is known as EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) reservation. With the introduction of this upper caste reservation, referred to as EWS, there has been a growing demand to accurately determine the total population of various castes. The Patna High Court also approved the Bihar government's request to conduct a caste-wise census. Subsequently, the state resumed the work it had initially begun and then paused, reigniting discussions about caste-based reservations, which remain a critical topic in the country's politics and the selection process for government jobs.
