Dr. S.R. Leela is an accomplished individual with a diverse range of interests and achievements. She hails from the remote village of Sampangere in Malur Taluk, Kolar District, and despite coming from an economically disadvantaged family, she pursued her education diligently. Her mother, Smt. Chudamaniyamma, provided unwavering support for her educational pursuits.
Dr. Leela's educational journey took her from primary education at Chikka Tirupathi to Bengaluru for her high school education. She graduated from APS College in Bengaluru, specializing in science subjects, with the assistance of a small scholarship. Although she had a fondness for physics and mathematics, she was captivated by Sanskrit, which she studied as one of her languages throughout her academic journey, including her postgraduate studies.
She completed her postgraduate degree, M.A. in Sanskrit, and chose a career in teaching. Dr. Leela actively sought to enhance her knowledge of Sanskrit by learning from various learned scholars. Her involvement with the FIP (Fellowship in Philosophy) program of UGC (University Grants Commission) opened up new opportunities for higher studies, leading to her M.Phil degree from Madras University and a Ph.D. from Bengaluru University, all while working at a college.
Her career as a lecturer at NMKRV College provided her with ample opportunities for growth. She took on roles such as NSS officer and director of the RV Institute of Sanskrit Studies, developing a deep interest in both fields. She later became a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) and dedicated herself to rural development projects, showcasing her background in theatre by producing Sanskrit films.
During her tenure as a professor and Head of the Sanskrit Department at NMKRV College, she organized numerous educational programs, including student seminars, national seminars, drama festivals, and more. Her passion for classical arts, particularly Sanskrit Theatre, led her to establish the cultural organization called Abhinaya Bhatati®. The organization has staged Sanskrit plays in prestigious venues across India.
Dr. Leela has also made significant contributions to literature. She has authored about 15 books in three languages: Sanskrit, English, and Kannada. Her deep knowledge of Sanskrit has made her an adept translator, and her work "Glory of Vasistha Ganapathi Muni" received acclaim. She also contributed to the Kathasaritsagara project, translating Sanskrit to Kannada.
Her academic pursuits extended globally, as she presented papers at international conferences and conducted research on topics like Chanakya's Arthashastra and the Buddhist classic Buddha charitam of Ashvaghosha. She also explored Indian temple art and architecture during her visit to the Ankhorvat Temple in Cambodia.
Dr. Leela is inspired by the philosophies of Swami Vivekananda and is well-versed in the literature of Ramakrishna and Vivekananda. She delivers talks on Indian literature, philosophy, and tradition and admires figures like Sister Nivedita, Shivaji, Jhansi Rani, Kittur Chennamma, Subhash Chandra Bose, Veer Savarkar, and other heroic personalities and patriots.
After retiring from her college position in 2005, she joined the Mahabharata Pratishtana as the Editorial Coordinator of the Encyclopedia of the Mahabharata. She contributed to the organization by editing books and organizing national seminars on the Mahabharata. In 2008, she was nominated to the upper house of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
Dr. Leela is actively involved in various service organizations and academic institutions, further contributing to society and her field of expertise.
