Rightly said. Indira Gandhi held regular press conferences. Modi on the other hand is all about PR and very little work. Indira did not create ideological hatred in the society. Modi is only about winning election through divide and rule. Also, Modi is incapable of holding genuine press conferences since he knows he will be exposed. Indira's Emergency emerged out of a desire to save her own image. It wasn't the outcome of an "ideological thought process". On the other hand, a fascist and authoritarian government is the logical endpoint of the BJP's Hindutva nationalist ideology. Polarization of the entire population along communal lines is Modi/BJP's eternal gift to India. During Indira's time, the general public overall hated all politicians. Even Congress voters disliked Indira. There were no Bhakts back then. If today an Emergency were to be imposed, it would be wholeheartedly welcomed by Bhakts, and they would happily volunteer to identify anti-nationals. Moreover, Indians rejected Indira Gandhi's version of what a state should look like in the very next elections, in which she and her party were defeated.

Your observations are correct. Indira was more authoritative than authoritarian. She did great things for the nation. Of course, there were a few aberrations. But she redeemed herself in the eyes of the people and in the end became a heroine.
