As we know the story of muthappan says that Padikutty amma of 'Ayyankara' had no children. As usual Padikkutty amma and her maid servants enter for the royal bath at 'Thiruvan kadavu'. While bathing she heard the cry of an infant. She looked around but there was no one.Again the crying was heard.She found a child abandoned on the shore.The child was carried with great affection to Ayyankara illam.The mother lovingly raised the baby.Growing up, Muthappan had poor children as friends. Muthappan realized that those around him were socially and financially inferior. Others ate fish and meat but it was not used in Ayyankara.Muthappan had started hunting with his friends at that age.
Not only hunting, but also hunting birds and animals were brought home and cooked and eaten.Ayyankara ruler told Padikkutty amma that he would not stay here if Muthappan continued with such a life.At the age of sixteen, when he was mentally strong, Muthappan set out to visit the country. He went straight to the place called Muzhakku velkikkotta.From there he saw a very beautiful mountain.Muthappan saw Kunnathoor Padi. Muthappan loves Kunnathoor and goes there.When he reached the top of the hill he saw a large palm tree.The toddy made by Chandan was on top of the tree. Muthappan wanted it and climbed to the top of the tree.Moothoran Chandan came through it while Muthappan was drinking toddy.Enraged at this Chandan took his bow and tried to attack Muthappan. Muthappan looked at him with his divine eyes and Chandan immediately turned into a stone.It was at that time that Chandan's wife 'Aaladiyathi' came that way.Aaladiyathi was upset when she saw Chandan turned to a stone.When she looked at the palm tree, she saw an old man.She let out a wild cry calling my Muthappa.She vowed to Muthappan like 'Painkuti', 'aka pooja', 'vellattam', 'thiruvappana', 'marayootu', 'madhu kalasham' etc.It is said that Muthappan restored Chandan to his former shape. Muthappan's first 'madappura' was built on the 'mada' by Chandan. It is for this reason that all the Muthappan temples are called 'madappura'.So far we have told the story of Muthappan Thiruvappana with black big beard and 'poy kannu'. Kunnathoorpadi is Muthappan's first madappura.It is located close to the Kodagu Hills.Earlier Muthappan 'vachals' says that there are 308 Madappuras.But today there are innumerable 'madappuras'.The 'Pura' built by Chandan on top of the 'Mada' is called 'Madappura'.There are many parts of Muthappan worship such as 'painkutty'' 'vellattam', 'thiruvappana' etc.In Theyyattam, after the 'Theyyam thidangal' ceremony, it is Vellattam. Muthappan has 'mala irakkal' ceremony.Muthappan 'vellattam' is also known as 'Kodumudi' 'vellattam'.The hair of Nambolan Muthappan is called 'kodumudi'.Vellattam often speaks like Puralimala Muthappan and Nambola Muthappan. Places where there is only 'vellattam' without Thiruvappana are known as 'podikkalam'.
