Gulikan theyyam performed at Korambakkallu Sree Mothakkudi Gurukkal Devasthanam
The myth of Gulikan is that when Lord Shiva’s most devoted devotee Markandeya clung to Shivalinga to save himself from Yama the God of death who threw Yamapasham (ropes of death) over him, Lord Shiva got extremely furious. Yama was turned into ashes when Lord Shiva opened his third eye. In the absence of Yama, there was not death happening and the mass of Earth began increasing. In order to find a solution Devas approached Lord Shiva. Shiva created Gulikan from the thumb of his left leg. Gulika performed the acts of Yama and as a result mass of earth became normal. Gulikan Theyyam is performed across northern Kerala.
Theyyam is a popular ritual form of dance worship in Kerala and Karnataka. Theyyam consists of thousand-year-old traditions, rituals and customs. The people of these districts consider Theyyam itself as a channel to a god and they thus seek blessings from Theyyam. There are about 456 types of Theyyam.
ഗുളികൻ തെയ്യം
മലബാറിലെ കാവുകളിൽ കെട്ടിയാടപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു തെയ്യമാണു ഗുളികൻ തെയ്യം.
പരമശിവന്റെ ഇടതു തൃക്കാലിന്റെ പെരുവിരൽ പൊട്ടിപിളർന്നുണ്ടായ അനർത്ഥകാരിയും ക്ഷിപ്രപ്രസാദിയുമായ ദേവനാണ് ഗുളികൻ. തന്റെ ഭക്തനായ മാർക്കണ്ഡേയന്റെ രക്ഷാർത്ഥം മഹാദേവൻ കാലനെ തന്റെ മൂന്നാം തൃക്കണ്ണ് തുറന്നു ഭസ്മമാക്കി. കാലനില്ലാത്തത് കാരണം എങ്ങും മരണമില്ലാതെയായി. ഭാരം സഹിക്കവയ്യാതെ ഭൂമി ദേവി ദേവന്മാരോടും അവർ മഹാദേവനോടും പരാതി പറഞ്ഞു. അതിനൊരു പരിഹാരമെന്നോണം പെരുവിരൽ ഭൂമിയിലമർത്തിയ മഹാദേവന്റെ ഇടതു തൃക്കാൽ പൊട്ടി അതിൽ നിന്നും ഗുളികൻ അവതരിച്ചു. ത്രിശൂലവും കാലപാശവും നൽകി ഗുളികനെ കാലന്റെ പ്രവൃത്തി ചെയ്യാൻ മഹാദേവൻ ഭൂമിയിലേക്കയച്ചു.
ജനനം മുതൽ മരണം വരെ ചെറുതും വലുതും നല്ലതും ചീത്തയുമായ എല്ലാ കർമ്മങ്ങളിലും ഗുളികന്റെ സാന്നിധ്യം ഉണ്ടാകുമെന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. വെടിയിലും പുകയിലും കരിയിലുമടക്കം നാനാകർമ്മങ്ങളിലും വസിക്കുന്ന ദേവനാണ് താനെന്നു തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ വാമൊഴി.
