I think lookism (thanks for the new word😅) is deep rooted inside us. Even though I know it's wrong, there is still that inner tendency in me to judge people according to looks. But mostly that ends as a first impression only. Once we know what's inside the box, our attitude towards the person changes.

ഡിഗ്രി പഠനകാലത്ത് ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് പഠിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്ന ഒരു ടീച്ചർ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. കാണാൻ അത്യാവശ്യം ലുക്കുള്ള, പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് കേന്ദ്രീയ വിദ്യാലയത്തിലോ CBSE യിലോ പഠിച്ച് വന്നവരോട് പ്രത്യേക സ്നേഹമായിരുന്നു പുള്ളിക്കാരിക്ക്. ഇപ്പോൾ ഒരു അദ്ധ്യാപകനായ ഞാൻ അങ്ങനെയാവാതിരിക്കാൻ എപ്പോഴും ശ്രദ്ധിക്കാറുണ്ട്.

മുൻപ് look ഇല്ല എന്ന് ഓർത്ത് വിഷമിച്ചെങ്കിലും ഇപ്പൊ അത് ഓർത്ത് ആണ് ഞാൻ ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ സന്തോഷിക്കുന്നത്. Look ഇല്ലാത്തോണ്ട് എനിക്ക് വന്ന കല്യാണ ആലോചനകൾ എല്ലാം അവർ തന്നെ വേണ്ടന്ന് വയ്ക്കും. അത് എനിക്ക് ജോലി നോക്കാൻ കൂടുതൽ സമയം നൽകി. പക്ഷെ നന്നായി പഠിച്ച നല്ല look ഉള്ള എന്റെ friend ന് degree ചെയ്യുമ്പോ തന്നെ കെട്ടി കൊച്ചായി പഠനം പാതി വഴിക്ക് ഉപേക്ഷിച്ചു. അവൾ ഇപ്പോഴും ആ വിഷമം പറയും. സ്കൂളിൽ അവഗണന നേരിട്ടെങ്കിലും ഇപ്പൊ happy ആണ് ഞാൻ. ഇപ്പൊ ഉള്ള കല്യാണ market ലെ അവഗണന എനിക്കൊരു അനുഗ്രഹം ആയെ തോന്നിട്ടുള്ളു. 😂

Physically unattractive ആയത് കൊണ്ട് പലപ്പോഴും ഞാൻ അതെൻ്റെ ഭാഗ്യം ആയി ചിന്തിക്കാറുണ്ട്. പുറകെ വന്നു ശല്യം ചെയ്യാൻ ആൾകാർ ഇല്ല. Unwanted attention ഇല്ല, ആരും തന്നെ mind പോലും ചെയ്യില്ല. But at the same time, friends നെ ഉണ്ടാക്കാനും maybe relationship ഉണ്ടാക്കാനും ഒക്കെ കുറച്ചധികം difficult ആണ്. കാരണം love at first sight ഒന്നും എന്തായാലും ഉണ്ടാകില്ല but aa concept എനിക്ക് ഇഷ്ടവുമല്ല. പിന്നെ physically unattractive ആയത് കൊണ്ട് ഒരാൾക്ക് വന്ന് സംസാരിക്കാൻ ഒരു inhibition ഉണ്ടാവുകയും ചെയ്യും. So thinking about makes me sad always, but അതിൽ എന്തെങ്കിലും positive കണ്ടെത്താൻ ആണ് ശ്രമിക്കുന്നത് 😅

Even ചെറിയ ക്ലാസ്സുകളിൽ പോലും അങ്ങനെ select ചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്നത് കാണാൻ cute ആയിട്ടുള്ള കുട്ടികൾ ആയിരിക്കും. അങ്ങനെ അവർ പോലും ഒരു previlaged ഗ്രൂപ്പിൽ വരും irrespective of their talent

സത്യം.. നിറം കുറഞ്ഞതിൻ്റെ പേരിൽ പെൺകുട്ടികൾ അനുഭവിച്ച അത്രയും വിഷമം ആരും അനുഭവിച്ചു കാണില്ല.. " നല്ല സുന്ദരി ആണല്ലോ പക്ഷേ നിറം കുറവായി പോയി അമ്മേടെ അത്ര പോലും നിറം ഇല്ല, ... പെണ്ണുകാണാൻ വന്നിട്ട് അവർക്ക് മോളെ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടോ " എന്നിങ്ങനെ ഉള്ള യാതൊരു വിധ ഉളുപ്പും ഇല്ലാത്ത ചോദ്യങ്ങൾ നിരവധി കേട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട്.. പ്ലസ് one ഇലു first year ഇല് ഓണപ്പരീക്ഷ ക്ക് ക്ലാസ്സ് topper ആയപോൾ നിന്നെ കണ്ടാൽ പറയില്ലാ നന്നായി പഠിക്കും എന്ന് വരെ പറഞ്ഞ ടീംസ് ഉണ്ട്.. സൊസൈറ്റി ഒരിക്കലും മാറില്ല.. നമ്മൾ ആണ് മാറേണ്ടത്.. പണ്ടൊക്കെ തിരിച്ചു പറയാൻ പറ്റില്ല വിഷമം കൊണ്ട്.. ഇന്ന് നന്നായി തിരിച്ച് പറയും.. തൊലിക്ക് കുറച്ച് നിറം കുറഞ്ഞു എന്നെ ഉള്ളൂ.. അംഗവകല്യം ഒന്നും ഇല്ലാലോ.. എന്നോ കളിയാക്കിയ ആളെ അവരുടെ ഏതെങ്കിലും ഒരു മൈനസ് എടുത്തു ചോദിച്ചോ ഒക്കെ.. പറഞ്ഞ അതേ ആളെ അതെ രീതിയിൽ.. അവർക്കൊന്നും യാതൊരു sympathi കൊടുക്കേണ്ട കാര്യമില്ല.. എന്നാലേ പറയുന്നവർക്ക് കൊള്ളൂ.. 😉

ചെറുപ്പത്തിൽ ഒരു പാട് അനുഭവിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്..അവസാനം ആളുകളിൽ നിന്നും നിന്നും ഒഴിഞ്ഞു മാറി നടക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങി... എവടെ ചെന്നാലും സഹതാപം നിറഞ്ഞ വാക്കുകൾ ആയിരുന്നു... മെലിഞ്ഞതിന്റെയും നിറത്തിന്റെ പേരിലും കുറെ കേട്ടിരുന്നു.. കുടുംബത്തിൽ അവരുടെ കാഴ്ചപാടിൽ ഞാൻ ഭംഗി കുറഞ്ഞ ആളായിരുന്നു... അവസാനം ആളുകൾ ക്കിടയിലേക് ഇറങ്ങാൻ തന്നെ പേടി ആയി... സ്വയം ഒതുങ്ങി കൂടാൻ തുടങ്ങി... പിന്നെ അതിന്റെ പേരിൽ കുറെ കേട്ടു... അതൊക്കെ ആലോചിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഇപ്പോഴും ഒരു നീറ്റൽ ആണ് നെഞ്ചിൽ...

മുടി വളർത്തുന്ന കാര്യത്തിൽ ഇത് വ്യക്തമാണ്. കാണാൻ കൊള്ളാവുന്ന ഒരുത്തൻ മുടി വളർത്തിയാൽ കളർ ചെയ്താൽ സ്റ്റൈൽ ആവും അല്ലാത്തവർ ചെയ്താൽ വേറെ പേരും വിളിക്കും.

For me it was the other way around, I was "fair and handsome" by societal standards. So every teacher assumed that I was good in studies and extra curricular activities, and used to pick me for most of the things. But I was on the other spectrum, I was extremely introverted (still am but doing better because of corporate culture), having stage fright, just an average student, never liked attention at all, was shy around girls etc. And everyone set expectation on me that I was so and so, but when they came to know about my true "colors" they used to say "I never expected this from you". I still remember one of my colleagues jokingly saying that in her project if there is a tie while selecting new employees, the selection will be based on looks. Knew something was wrong with the joke, but didn't have an idea on lookism then .l too had 'seen' people by their looks, atleast in the first meet,and deep inside i too had made decisions based on looks, it's hard to admit but its the truth. Recent talks about pretty privilege in social media has made me aware of my mistake and i had begun to consciously make choices in such situations . In such attempts,people may joke about the 'nanma' in you and instead of getting offended, the situation should be handled well.I remember maybe the younger version of me had passed on similar comment in my mind if people comeup with such opinions. False idea's are passed on generation to generation and now that we are aware of our mistakes we have to consciously make choices to put an end to such misconceptions.
