Diverse Radiation (Jurassic Period, around 200-145 million years ago): During the Jurassic period, dinosaurs began to diversify rapidly. This era saw the rise of well-known groups such as the theropods (which include the iconic Tyrannosaurus rex and smaller, bird-like dinosaurs) and sauropodomorphs (long-necked, herbivorous dinosaurs like Brachiosaurus). This period was marked by the evolution of larger body sizes and more specialized adaptations.
Further Diversification (Cretaceous Period, around 145-65 million years ago): In the Cretaceous period, dinosaurs continued to evolve and diversify. This era introduced many new groups and forms, including the ceratopsians (like Triceratops), hadrosaurids (duck-billed dinosaurs), and more advanced theropods, including the famous Velociraptor and the ancestors of modern birds. The Cretaceous period ended with the mass extinction event around 66 million years ago.
Extinction and Legacy: At the end of the Cretaceous period, a massive extinction event, likely caused by an asteroid impact and possibly volcanic activity, led to the extinction of about 75% of Earth's species, including most dinosaurs.
