Sri Lanka is the only commercial producer of vein graphite, highest purity graphite with
carbon content: 97 - 99.5%. Although, there is a great demand for Sri Lankan graphite
(graphite is sold at an average of USD 2 per kilo). It is possible to create value added
materials such as graphene (which costs about 10,000 USD per Kilogram) and demand a
premium price and increase foreign exchange earnings to the country.
Graphene is the highest level of Graphite value added form and its applications vary from
use in batteries, renewable energy and energy storage systems such as super capacitors, to
electrical and electronic systems. Also they are used in smart textiles and wearable
technologies. Graphene’s nano carbon atoms make it an ideal conductor of both electricity
and heat. Therefore, Graphene is an efficient conductor and is also fire resistant, incredibly
flexible yet 200 times stronger than steel and an ultra-light material.
Sri Lankan vein Graphite is the best starting material to commercially process Graphene.
Sri Lanka’s time is opportune to make way in to this market as a supplier of pure vein
Graphite and its allotrope Graphene.
Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology has made a breakthrough innovation in graphene
processing from graphite.
Herewith Dr.Lakshitha Pahalagedara - Head of Business Development at SLINTEC
discusses the aim of educating the public about what can be done for the local economy
through graphene based technologies…
