Cambodia marked Vesak Day or Vesak Bochea (also known as Buddha Jayanti, Buddha Day, Buddha Birthday) in the kingdom, on the 22nd of May every year. Khmers living abroad may choose to celebrate during a weekend rather than just specifically the 22nd.
Vesak Bochea celebrates and commemorates three separate Buddhist occasions: the anniversary of the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death. According to Buddhist teaching, all three of these events fell on exactly the same date (during different years). In 1999, it was even officially recognized by the United Nations as an essential religious festival. Not only in Cambodia, this event is one of primarily Buddhist festival that is celebrated in most of South, Southeast and East Asian
