Elliot's social awkwardness reminds me of how I used to be back in middle school. When I first got transferred to my new middle school, I wasn't exactly social but I did end up becoming friends with people that didn't mind my social awkwardness/issues and it took me about 2 grades to finally become at least somewhat decently social.
