Could it be the reason you're finding so many shells is that there are so few tourists? There would have been a number of people on the beach shelling with you if things were normal. I seem to remember after coming down to Sanibel for years that I found more Pear Whelks during the summer months. What a great albino find! Congratulations! 😊

Just curious, I remember the video where you explained the reason for better shelling in the winter, due to more wind and winter storms etc. I’m wondering if it’s the same on the east coast since they have bigger waves all the time, is it better over there in the winter too? Just think… if the summer shelling has been this good, imagine how awesome winter shelling might be!
@fredamoore1743
@fredamoore1743 Год назад
I'm in SC and yes we have great shelling in fall due to storm season and winter too. But it gets really cold and windy so you have to bundle up but the shells are really great especially big whelks.

I really don't know all that much about East Coast shelling. I've only been over there a few times but my understanding is that yes, winter shelling is better over there as well. I'm always afraid of what I'll miss on my beaches to take the trip over there in the winter 🤣

Dear Sharmon, Congratulations on finding that Albino Giant Atlantic Cockle! Yay!! I'm so happy for you! What a fantastic find. 😍 I know for sure you will find your albino Olive! Your eagle eyes will find it. And what a great haul. So many beautiful shells in summertime! It really makes you wonder why they are here in such abundance. Maybe also the result of El Niño? I was happy you went off the beach, even though the shells kept coming. That thunderstorm looked nasty. I hope you have a wonderful week, filled with sunshine and amazing finds! Sending you lots of love and, of course, a big hug! xoxo ❤, Ilona

Ilona! My beach friend from the Netherlands! Yes, this trip was quite fun with so many surprises I wasn't expecting. I guess I figure every trip I go on, there is at least one little highlight I can kind of surround the trip with. On this trip I had quite a few! I actually love storms and thunder and lightning - just not when I'm ON the beach LOL! Our summer clouds here are quite impressive. And many people have been asking about the water temperature and I see that July 2023 is the same as July 2020 so here it's the same as always in summer....HOT! I too hope you have a good week and know that I'm sending you truck loads of sunshine and love ❤️❤️❤️❤️

The pear whelks are pretty sturdy once they reach a certain size, but those paper figs! I didn't find any on this day but those delicate shells are a mystery to me. I wish I could have filmed the birds more without making them upset, but they were clearly in "raising babies" mode!

Hello Beach Angel! I'm so glad to see you tonight. It's been a bad week and I needed some of your joy! Sounds like you've got it to spare! Hi everybody! Glad you're here, too! That burgundy scallop is gorgeous! I'd hate to see the baby that lost that ear! Big baby! I like those pink tellins. Oh, you saved a bare foot from stepping on that jewelbox! That would REALLY hurt, especially if the sharp spine broke off in someone's foot! That poor little used-to-be tree! It looks so sad, but if I had to die anywhere, the beach is as good as anywhere! That dark lightning whelk is so pointed! I never saw one that sharp before! That's a butterscotch colored fighting conch! Wasn't there a tropical storm that churned up the Southern Gulf a little while ago and then went out? Maybe that would account for the extra special shelling...just thinking. Wow!🎉 Hurray on you for the albino cockles! Great sand dollars, too! What a great day you had, Sharmon! The Creator really wanted you to have your fill of shells today! (If that's even possible for a beach angel!) Good idea to check the upper rack line! That sure paid off! An urchin! Hurray! Oh, I do love to hear the laughter of angels! Yours washed over me like a warm wave, comforting my aching soul. A dear friend and "brother" is getting ready to leave this place and my heart is sore for him. His wife, who is my bestest friend, left us at the start of the pandemic and he has been separated from her too long. His brave heart just can't go on for much longer. I'll miss him, but we'll all be together before long. It's almost time to fly away Home! Oh, that is a really beautiful pear whelk! Hard hearted Hannah, you just want to not have to sleep in a tree for all the shells on the bed! Skimmers are so cool! I miss the seabirds so much! Babies are so cute when they start running around on their tiny legs and too big feet! Gorgeous shells today, darling! You're right about the white of the albino shells, it really is a special shade of white. Sorry, Procol Harum! 😂 Much love to everyone from rainy, stormy Tennessee!

A majority of the people that own homes on FMB (Fort Myers Beach) are not full-time residents. Our population swells in the winter like crazy. Unfortunately, that dang hurricane trashed all the hotels and condos that might provide a place to stay this time of year, so there isn't much back open again yet. I love having the beach to myself, but not like this. Hopefully progress is being made on rebuilding and people will be back this winter.

Could it be the reason you're finding so many shells is because of the lack of tourists? The beach, at this time of year, normally would have had a number of people shell hunting at the same time with you, or been out at dawn collecting as well. In the years I've been coming down to Sanibel, I believe that I found more Pear Whelks in the summer months. What a fantastic albino find for you! Congratulations 😊

There are some fish that build elaborate circles on the ocean floor. Those videos are fun to watch!

Great haul despite it being summer time. Gorgeous sea shell finds. Glad your being careful when there is lightning in the area.

one more question, you said that you don't normally see shells like that during the summer.. what time of year do you normally see shells like you did in this video? Thanks for your help!
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife Год назад
In the summer I do not expect to really find much on the beach. It's slows down a bit and normally I'm only finding common shells. Finding such a great variety this time of year is a little unusual. I would expect to find shells like the ones I found in the video in the spring or fall.

I love the Skimmers and your videos! Babies flatten out in & blend in with sand & people sometimes step on them. Just went to lovers old gazebo area to new pass had some good 🐚 take care

We adamantly hope the reason you’re finding so many shells, is not because water temperature has gotten to warm.
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife Год назад
I just checked the water temp for July 2022 and it's the same as it was for July 2020 so I don't think that's the case.

Could the amount of shells be because of the water temperature being way above normal?
@SWFBeachLife

I don't think the water temperature is "way" above normal. July 2022 was the same as July 2020. Something to think about though!

I live in Broward County the news has been talking about the water temperature being in the mid to high 90's I guess I assumed that was high. I love watching your channel since I can't make it to SW Fl as often as I would like. Thank you for your great videos 😊

@@anniem3604 The news stinks. They just pump up everything negative to get people to watch. It’s warm, but nothing unusual 🌞

One degree in water temperature is not noticeable to us, but it can affect the reefs and in turn the wildlife. The reefs are like the canary in mines. So are the mangroves. Without either, our fish will die out. It's a slow death. This is why our state colleges are involved in replanting coral for the past 10 years. We need to be more aggressive in replanting mangroves and palms and seagrapes. The root systems help hold the sand, preventing erosion of our beaches. Trees cool the planet, and give oxygen. The loss or change in one eco system can have a devastating domino effect.

@@deborahgaylord7098 I know - I'm worried about our reefs too. I love knowing that there are divers out there helping build them up again!

I've seen a few photos of those albino olives, and one is from a very reliable sheller so I do think they're out there. This albino cockle I thought was the cat's pajamas. I'm also thrilled it was in good shape!

Thank you for being such an awesome ambassador for SW Florida, and for encouraging us to come back to the beaches. Your auctions have also been pretty amazing. Thank you for ALL you do Sharmon. I love your respect for nature - collecting the garbage.and making sure you never take anything that’s living! You are VERY appreciated! Your videos are healing - almost as good as being on the beach myself!
