You can tell people who mightve watched Fresh Prince but definitely didn't watch or get Martin. Definitely didn't watch Life. I LOVE The Ringer but you can tell it's an entire staff of people who retroactively saw Friday lol

Agree with a lot of the comments here. I'm a 27 year old black man that loves movies and really enjoyed this one, which I'll add I saw today on Father's Day in Baldwin Hills in a packed theater that was loving it too. But this podcast is a tough listen sometimes and this episode was especially tough, because it's missing a bit of diversity of thought. A voice like Van's would've been perfect for this episode.

I also was initially shocked that Theresa Randle didn't return as Marcus' wife, but then (per IMDB) I noticed that Bad Boys For Life was her last role, and before that she hadn't been in a movie for a decade. Apparently she may be ill, but maybe she's just done as an active actor. RE: Why Rita and Mike weren't together anymore - at the end of Bad Boys For Life, Rita was promoted as Captain Howard's successor, so ethically they couldn't have the "lieutenant dating their superior" dynamic.

I’m sure Sean nor Amanda will ever see this but I’m going to get it off my chest. I’ve been listening to this podcast for about 6 months because I love movies. There is, however, a big gaping hole in the movies that are discussed on this podcast. There are hardly ever any discussions about black movies and it shows when we get to takes about black movies like this horrendous Bad Boys take. I’m a 40 year old black woman who grew up with Will and Martin. I’ve seen mostly all of their movies and the Bad Boys franchise is something that is beloved by most people in my community. They are meant to be fun action movies. I think the script was good. It did have a few issues, but nothing that made the movie any less enjoyable. The theater I saw it at people were laughing throughout the movie and even clapped at the end. Amanda’s reasoning that she now has a “complicated” thought about Will made me roll my eyes. He slapped Chris Rock, but most black people think he rightfully deserved that slap and joke about slapping him again. Sean glosses over one of the most important things and that is this movie had a 44% black audience. A market that they realize is underserved but they don’t spend any time speaking to that fact. To do that you would need people like me to actually break down what you two are missing. Also, I don’t know what you two were watching but Will and Martin still do have chemistry on that screen and it shows to the rest of us. I have more I could say but I’ll leave it there.

Very fair take, and it's made worse by the fact that they NEVER address it and only make the most cursory attempts to correct it by bringing in Van or Wesley Morris for a discussion every three months or so. It's the lack of awareness that's most egregious to me, at the very least acknowledge this, especially in a discussion like this! I appreciate your response so much as a 43 year old white guy whom gets bugged by the #BigPictureSoWhite problem now and then as well (especially when they gloss over it with a flailing sledgehammer so clumsily in convos like this). And trust me, they will read this and hopefully attempt to wrap their heads around it if not outright address it going forward.

All facts… they bring on Wesley and van who are both multi cultured and have seen so many movies but then Amanda Sean etc definitely hasnt seen or cared about most black movies and it shows.. the people that can’t get over will smith slapping Chris are mainly white people.. it is partly racism but looking deeper into it it’s white peoples love for the nice black man.. for decades will did no wrong and was the nice guy and that is why his movies crossed over into white culture.. he was the safe didn’t curse or get mad or say something controversial type of person.. but as a fan of will and loving every bit of his movies and music you’d know Will has bottled up so much… and at the end of the day athletes get into full on fist fights where one guy will punch another with no warning, what’s the difference in that and you not caring vs will slapping someone and it causing such a uproar… my theater was full and it was mostly us black folks and it’s because we never turned our back on Will like some white people have..

This definitely isn't a movie made for The Ringer staff, unfortunately lol I was at a packed theater with a mostly black audience that was clapping and laughing and cheering damn near the whole movie. I appreciate the deep dive but this one clearly ain't for y'all 😂

Nice, personable guy but "best interviewers" is a bit much. He's curious about people, which is more than we can say about most in this self-obsessed hellscape we exist in. But those shows are still basically press junkets rather than probing and incisive examinations of whom the person actually is.

It’s so interesting hearing them say Will and Martin don’t have the secret sauce any more. I laughed throughout the whole thing. I genuinely thought it was hilarious. And maybe that had to do with the fact that my IMAX screening was packed and we were all on that communal high. Idk. Maybe it’s a generational thing? Or maybe I’m just bugging lol

I'm truly shocked that Amanda's first reference for Eric Dane is Grey's Anatomy rather than Euphoria. I don't understand how anyone in media, especially someone who postures as being somehwat on the cutting edge of what's hot and in style and does an entire gossip pod, could have missed Euphoria of ALL television shows. I feel like this entire movie subtly deals with the slap incident The Reggie sequence... a sequence where a man defends his with with extreme violence as everyone watches it on fold on screen in shock and horror... and a bit of excitement The way Will is a perfect husband to his new wife and father to his new son, opposing his own experiences with his actual father The point where *spoilers* he is slapped quite explicitly The ongoing mental health issues, Marcus experiences If you really want to reach, the fact both characters are essentially controlled by a deceased father figure Reggie getting respect at the end of the movie for said violent act Even the title "Ride or Die" challenges you to make a choice on how to respond to Smith and challenges Smith to deal with his past or fade into the background I dont know, maybe its all a reach but, definitely worth considering

Until you people keep the same energy for dana white putting hands on his wife you are not allowed to criticize any blk man that made 1 mistake. His good outways his bad. It's crazy how bias you guys are towards blk men. Clearly that Oscar's incident was selective outrage from the mayo nation.

That tends to happen when people have a nuclear overreaction to things. Chris Rock has been talking shit about Jada for decades, and Will popped him for it. Then most people moved on.

To each their own, but I went to a midday showing at the Lincoln Center IMAX in NYC and had an incredible time! The entire theater was laughing at jokes and cheering after action sequences, especially the Reggie sequence. Also, I got so pumped seeing Melanie Liburd cause I loved her character in Alan Wake 2.
